I was actually just thinking that too.

I think if it takes off I'm going to use a few chunks of natural pine which I got from the same habitat the myc was from.

I'll cut them up in wood chips and the sawdust will go in the pot and hopefully help it along, and the chips of pine will go into the larger patch when it's ready to be moved, I guess I should say IF it gets to the point where it's ready to moved.

K update guys, I moved it from the pot with the soil in the bottom as it was bothering me, Now its in a box lined with wet cardboard which I pulled apart and exposed the corrugated part.

I took the pine chips out for now and poured the mycelium chunks and the shredded cardboard on top of the new sheets of cardboard, upon inspection some slight new growth had appeared on the chunks, it was very visible as being bright white and fresh next to the older stuff underneath.

Good sign I think, I this change in habitat will do it good.

Does this look better to spawn then my previous pot idea?

Perhaps if you sandwich it with more cardboard it will retain its moisture better.

more cardboard was added yesterday, and I moved the box outside.
Fresh myc growth is starting to show up, only a few dots of white here and there but its very slowly colonizing the cardboard.

I'll check back on it later today or tomorrow and may take a new pic to show the fresh myc.

seen the first signs of actual growth today, so I misted the box and left it shut again.

Hopefully by about the 1 week stage I should see some actual colonization of the cardboard.

Am I at any risk of contams with the process I've described here, I'd hate to get a decent colony up and running only to have it destroyed by contamination.

lots of fresh and healthy looking myc, its already starting to look very rhizomorphic even though the growth really isn't more then an inch or so in the spots where it took off from the wild myc.

Will probably take a picture later on just to get the AOK from my fellow shroomites that its looking healthy.

3-5 days for the first signs of myc growth is fairly normal right? when can I expect it too really start taking off?

day 5

The jar that I transered mycelium from a tupperware container has really taken off now, its got about an inch or so of really rhizomorphic mycelium.

The box outside is a little bit behind the jar, I'm going to try sandwiching more cardboard to give the myc some more cover in its early stages. Its slowly colonizing the box though

I'm going to cut some fresh pine chips today then soak them in normal tap water and leech.
When the contents of the box are ready to be used I'll boil them in the bleach water solution and leech again before using them in the patch just to be safe.

more photos at the 1 week mark, there should be lots more growth by then hopefully.

heres the jar

sorry bout the shitty pic, its hard to get a photo close up in a jar.

Looking healthy so far but I'm nervous since this is about when everyone usually gets contams. going to move this chunk of cardboard out of the jar into a tiny tray of wood chips to get it out in mother nature and allow it too start eating the chips as well.

added some soaked cardboard to the box as well so can't see much now but it was drying out way too quickly I had to mist it 2-3 times a day to keep it damp, hopefully this will speed up the growth.

this is one of the dozen or so chunks in the outside box, they're all solid myc like the chunk in the middle of this picture. I need a better camera I know :p

this has been covered with an additional layer to provide some added dampness and darkness for the myc to colonize

I think the best way to avoid contams is to keep it outside with mother nature where the contams arent concentrated.

Im not sure i understand this, why would you want to leech nutrients out of the pine chips? I wouldnt boil in bleach water, if anything try pasteurizing the woodchips but i dont think that its too necessary. Also woodchips all alone wont provide the best habitat, its best to mix in sawdust at a 50:50 ratio.

the jar is inside and the box is outside, little bit of an experiment as well I guess. lol
today I'm moving the colonized cardboard from the jar into a bath of Beech wood chips from the pet store. There tiny little chips and I'm only going to put enough of a layer to cover the colonized myc.

In the new tray will be a new layer of soaked cardboard on the bottom, the colonized cardboard from the jar next, then an inch or so of the beech wood chips.

This will become a tray of spawn chips if all goes to plan where I will move it too some larger wood chips, probably pine. I'll take your advice on a 50-50 ratio of sawdust as well, thanks dude!

The box I'm going to leave and keep misted until it fully colonizes at which point I'll decide what to do with it, I'm sorting out a nice shady spot for it underneath a tree in the garden somewhere.

well the growth in the lower layers of the box now that its more dense is staggering, really taken off in a few spots.

The myc from the jar is now loosely covered by the additional layers of new cardboard and then some pine bark has been added on top, less then 1 inch thick.

The pine bark was soaked in some cold water for a few hours then drained and rinsed before being added.

Some pics in the next few days if everything goes well. Not much I can do other then wait and mist now  :oldman2:

well it was an exciting day today, the left over cardboard from the jar has even start to colonize viciously even though it was just left on the countertop and forgotten.
So I put it in a tray outside with more cardboard and misted, hopefully it spreads over a few more pieces before I move it into its final resting place.
The myc from subaeruginosa seems to be a vigorous grower, it just wants to stay alive and keep going despite conditions.

Other news, 10 days from the start of this project the myc from the first wedges of cardboard has started to colonize the pine bark, even though its slow the fact I can see fresh growth on the top layer must mean that down below is probably doing awesome.

Will take some pics when theres something more to show, looks like everything is going well at this stage though.

Yeah underneath and out of sight will be where all the action is at, growth looked steady in one of my tubs but when I tipped it out I was like  at internal growth!

keep up the good work and if you ever want to swap spores for their European cousins for microscopy reasons, of course, (presuming legal down under) then be sure to hit me up

well a few bits of wood on the very top are starting to show signs of growth, it was only a few dots, but I picked up a few chunks of bark and it was fully colonized underneath in some areas only though, obviously from the original chunks I think. very exciting to see!

can't wait to see it spread out and reach it the top.
