Over the winter I procured some excellent cuttings of both E. Lageniformis and T. Pachanoi. They arrived and were in more than spectacular health, but unfortunately it was the middle of february and I opted to stow them away in my closet until spring time came around. Well spring is definitely here and I decided to take a look at my cuttings. I've only seen them once since I first got them about a month ago and they had not changed at all.
Today however, I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that 4 of the 6 cuttings have started to show signs of growth despite being in the closet in the dark! These puppies are ready to go!
(excuse the blurry photos as they resemble the haze I was in when I woke up this morning)
First the pachanoi:
Here is a picture of all three cuttings:
Notice that the middle of the three is what they all started out looking like. The two on the ends started growing their tips out in search of a tiny amount of light that must have been peeking in through a corner of the box
Here's a close up
They were laying on their side in the closet.
Now the Achuma:
These are spineless but I can all ready imagine how nice they'll look when the new spines come in.

Notice the root tips shooting out from the bottom of the left and middle cuttings!
Close up:

Simply incredible!

Be careful when you put them in the sun, The white/yellow tips are very prone to sunburn and the tips could die. I recommend putting them in some sun now, and slowly acclimate them to full sun, even if they are not potted yet.

That white growth is etiolated growth. Pot the cacti with root buds in dry soil, cut the etiolated growth off those that have it, and dust the cuts with sulfur if you have it.

ya, those tips wont fully recover no mater what, that section is already grown and that's what it'll be, better to cut it and let it put out some normal looking pups you could always replant the tips too as they will grow out looking more normal as they get bigger

Damn you guys are good! Thanks for the advice everyone.
I was honestly really impressed how much these things want to grow. Even with no soil or water just sitting in a box they are trying to make roots and grow their tips.
Appreciate the help

Well, sense you guys seem to know a thing or two can I ask another question?
Is there anything I should do about the blackish rot at the bottom of the pachanoi cuttings before I plant them?
Also why is dry soil recommended for starting the cuttings that have all ready rooted? When is the proper time to start watering?
Last time I started some cuttings they were from a vendor who offered "rooted" cuttings, and they certainly had roots but they were all dried up. I didn't really know what to do so I just stuck the cuttings as is into moist soil. They grew about 4 inches the first year and that seems on the low side of expected growth, but I think it had something to do with all the dead roots that I left attached and the new roots competing for space maybe?

for the rot, better to keep an eye on it if it doesnt look too bad, if it's bad u should probably cut it an re-caullous it, and dry soil is best to let it get used to the soil and encourage the roots to grow and poke around more looking for water, a week or two wait is best b4 watering
