Looks like bruising.

The angle in your second pic doesn't have enough light hitting it. I can't tell if it's mold or bruising from that picture.

That's toast, toss it.

What did you use to make that cake? It definitely doesn't look like brown rice flour. It doesn't look fully colonized either...

Well i've isolated this one and keepin a close watch....its been 2 days since i kept it in a segregated fruiting chamber.....no signs of pinning yet.....i used rye grain substrate and it took over 1 month for this partial colonization....i still have one cake in incubation phase....can the presence of this cake in the house contaminate the other one....Thanks for ur replies.....btw the strain is costa rica..

Look up pf tek and follow that, The cakes need to be fully colonised before fruiting.

That's because rye berries and other whole grains are for "bulk" growing, and are to be spawned to manure or coir or something similar. If you're doing cakes, stick with brown rice flour and vermiculite. It will hold together much better once it's colonized and won't turn into a "nasty turd looking thing" as you put it. :hehehe:

There's no need to hang on to that thing. It's done, and yes, it can spread the contaminant spores throughout your grow area and your whole house if you leave it around. That's not saying it will be dangerous to your health or anything, but it may prevent you from having any success in the future.

Check this site out if you haven't already. There's a wealth of knowledge in those video links. Just follow the steps to the 'T' and you'll be fine.

Not sure why you're knocking his method of cakes as I birth straight WBS cakes from 1/2 pint and pints and get results in my avatar and links in my sig.

OP - You prepared you're grain on the wet side and birthed a little soon. Next time just wait it out in the jar for an extra week or 2 (I give my jars 3 weeks after 100% colonized)

It looks like he is battling bacteria witch is nothing new. Definitely ok to separate the cake from the rest even though I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just make sure to fan that cake more often to dry (I also use a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide on cakes that start to do that and get a little out of hand)

Just make sure to pay attention to your babies and if you have further questions just post more pics :bigjoint:

Did you not notice all that mold in the first pics? Those cakes are done. No question about it. Keep it around if you like, but good luck with avoiding contamination in the future if you do.

I wasn't knocking his method or anything, I was just saying most folks start with BRF in cakes and go from there. Grains will still work, but they're more suited for spawning. My fault for the confusion!
