I finally get home after 3-4 days in the suburbs to find my PC messed up for no good reason. It has windows vista everything package, mcafe virus an all. It turns on ok but randomly goes to a blue screen and restarts before I can read the screen. It saying something about a problem with Windows that's about all I can read. This really sux my computer is everything we don't have tv here we stream everything and all our music is on there I'm on an iPhone posting which I hate anything but the big screen is a strain on my vision I can't live without the Internet anyone have any idea what this could be? Hardware isues? Software? It never did this before it's always been a good pc.

try booting in safe mode or safe mode with networking and see if you still get the blue screen

Most likely what occurred is you had a power surge (or brown out) and it messed up your hard drive. You are likely looking at replacing your hard drive.

It's the blue screen of death. You're probably gonna have to reformat your harddrive(s) and reinstall Windows.
But if you wanna save files, you're gonna have to use another computer to try to recover your stuff.

There's part of the problem, Windows Vista is shit and Mcafee is worthless. Regardless, if you're getting BSOD out of nowhere when trying to boot up from shut down, my first guess would be that your RAM went bad. Try seeing if you can boot into safe mode.

Um no. BSOD happens for a lot of reasons, a lot of them being hardware related. Reformatting and doing data recovery is almost never the solution to a "BSOD on boot" problem.

Press f8 while booting your PC and go into safe mode. Let me know if it still gives you a blue screen.

i read something that said something about the blue screen being related to sites that are high in "graphics" if that helps any. but i dunno if thats the case since google image is working fine, but it happend after going to eBay as well

It is if your work for the Geek Sqaud. "Missing drivers??? Looks like we'll have to reformat." "The system needs to restart for updates to take effect?? Damnit, gonna have to reformat again!"

Jup, theres your problem. I would suggest installing Windows 7 (It is common practice to download it for free) but ofcourse we do not endorse such things

When you start your computer and it's still on the black screen with white text loading stuff, press and hold the F8. This should allow you some options to start windows
Code:
Choose Advanced Options for: Microsoft Windows Vista Please select an option:
Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging Enable low-resolution video (640x480) Last Known Good Configuration (advanced) Directory Services Restore Mode Debugging Mode Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement
Start Windows Normally
Description: Start Windows with only the core drivers and services. Use when you cannot boot after installing a new device or driver.
You should try starting windows in Safe Mode, if it loads properly, try rebooting your computer and see if it will start windows normally.

pic/music/docs gets stored in windows.old if you do a complete fresh install if you upgrade i think it doesn't even get moved, only thing you'll have to do is reinstall all your programs

I know vista sucks but I've never had a problem with it.

Hmmmmm.... Dids you leave your computer running while you were gone for those 3-4 days?
Did anyone other than yourself use the computer while you were gone? If so, I'm thinking you may be infected with the internet aids.
Edit - Try doing a system restore rather than a reformat.

BSODs can be caused by a million different reasons. 90% of the time though, it's RAM or drivers.
If you can get into safe mode, do a clean install of all your drivers. Latest Motherboard chipset, audio, and especially graphics drivers.
If you are still getting the BSOD, test your memory. Try removing all but 1 stick of RAM. If you still get the blue screen, take that stick out and test the others in the same way in the same slot. If the problem goes away, you most likely have a bad stick.
If you are still getting the BSOD, get into Windows, go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Startup and Recovery Settings and under "System Failure", UN-check "Automatically Restart"
Then the next time you get the BSOD, it will freeze on that screen. Write down the STOP code and any messages it gives you, then post them here.

thanx for all the help & support i always come to shroomery for all my PC needs gotta love the diversity and muli-purposes of this site. i dont have the patience or the 'smarts' to figure computer stuff out im going to have to get someone over here to help me lol when a computer doesnt do its job right i feel like putting it down like a lame horse. but i will def use this thread as a reference guide.

Follow Up:
well i dont have a facebook but my BF does now its the craziest thing my PC is working fine everywhere else but as soon as he uses Facebook we get the Blue Screen. i told him to google keywords: Blue Screen Facebook and sure enough theres a dozen other people out there that this is happening to Link to Search Results
does anyone have anything to add about Facebook causing Blue Screen Stop Errors? i dont believe its the "graphics overload" as i once did since i put on youtube videos, streamed anime, and put porn on all at once and its acting fine. its something to do with "FAGGY"fox browser
