Need help identifying these, found near Nashville Tennessee
    #14414208 - 05/07/11 08:21 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hi, I just started a new thread...I had these photos on someone elses by accident (Sorry I can only spend so much time reading rules at 1am) but I've re-threaded to avoid confusion.

-Found these outside Nashville, Tennessee in a cow pasture.

- Some were IN cow dung, some were AROUND cow dung. All of them were found in high grass tufts, some had small flowers blooming near them.

-
I did not specifically see blue bruising, however some were dark blue/black but it looked like they were starting to dry out. There were also some that looked moldy but we did not collect those.

-Someone in the other thread suggested Panaeolus papilionaceus, however I searched more photos of that species and they do not really look like the ones I found. I'm thinking more Psilocybe semilanceata. Will a spore print tell the difference between these two?

Q: Are these edible?
Q: Are these psychoactive?
Q: IF they are psychoactive, how many should I eat for a first trip? :mushroom2:

Much peace & Love :P:heart::wink:

Do a spore print... Good species to learn how to do spore prints... Should be black... If so, is probably a Pan species... Nice looking mushrooms... But not active and not worth eating

Liberty caps really look different, found in the fall, not on cow dung normally, have a purplely spore print... Have a 'gel' on the cap, ect

1. Psilocybe semilanceata doesn't grow in the Northern Hemisphere in May.

2. Psilocybe semilanceata doesn't grow from cow dung. Ever.

3. Psilocybe semilanceata doesn't grow in Tennessee. Ever.

Your mushrooms are Panaeolus papilionaceus.

Ok thank you all very much. Im on vacation near nashville right now..going back to Orlando on Sunday. These were my first pick ever. I was hoping to find something psychoactive up here in Tennnessee..do y'all have any suggestions? Would I have better luck looking in a different enviornment in TN or just wait and look in FL?

I've spent the past week researching stuff on line but im gonna invest in a book when I get home.

I just set up my spore print from the ones i picked yesterday. I used 3 mature caps but 2 looked wilted..will they stilll give imprints?

Here you go mate

Look up which ones grow in the area your in and research them. Figure out habitat, seasons, looks, etc and then go out and you will have much better luck.

Research first hunt later.

Actually, those look pretty meaty to me. Keep looking in the area, you might find cubes.

EDIT: You can pretty much increase your chances if you go further South though.

go back to florida and look in cow pastures, that will be your best chance of finding cubes. It's hard enough to find cubes in N.ga or the carolina's... (let alone Tennessee) best chance is South GA ---- all the way down to Miami!
