Has anyone on the board witnessed anyone or experienced this for themselves?
I have a family member that has developed swelling in the lower half of body and just thought I'd throw a post in here to see if I can get a response.
Biopsy testing will be done after the weekend and hopefully will find out answers soon here. Looks like kidney disease of some sort. Just don't know what's causing it.
I can update with more info later. There's a lot of text out there but its a lot to get into when the only symptoms basically are swelling. Tests just show excess protein in the urine.

Does or did your family member do a lot of drinking or drugs? It sounds like it could possibly be cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis of the liver can also be related to or caused by a number of different diseases.
Edema, is the term used when excess water is being stored by our bodies. If your family member is able to, its good to keep their legs up like when you're in bed or in a recliner as much as possible, it helps to keep some of the excess water higher up in their body and makes it easier to urinate.
Here, I just googled this: http://www.medicinenet.com/edema/article.htm

No he doesn't do drugs or drinks. Yeah I told him to elevate his legs above his heart. He is starting to do exactly that. The doctors in previous tests have told us that his liver looks healthy.

Oh if you are saying it is in his legs and/or feet that is usually a sign of diabetes.

True, I didn't think of diabetes at the time, but you are correct. Diabetes can cause edema too.

Ok I just want to update this thread.
So my dad is back or was a long time ago. He's on dialysis now treating his kidney failure caused by something. It is not certain what exactly is making his kidneys fail. He is 51 years old or about that somewhere there.
A few days ago he just had an operation to connect blood arteries and veins together so they can pump out and filter his blood more efficiently. He says he wants to wait about a year to see if his kidneys can recover from where they are at now. He doesn't wanna take any of his sons kidneys early. This is a seriously crazy thing that has happened to him. I have not stressed out about it much. I just hope his body figures out what is going on and heals itself. Otherwise whatever thing bad in there is just going to grow. Shit sucks. My dad is taking it pretty good. Still thinking about ways to make money and being active. He's buying another flipper upper and its crazy to even think about him trying to direct workers to fix a place; he use to do all the work himself. I just want him to be healthy cause damn - hes the glue of the family

Looks like people are clicking this thread.
My dads kidneys are bad. He is on the waiting list for a new one. Dialysis has been working and he just became trained into peritoneal dialysis. I'm not sure how it works just yet as I have been busy working and whatnot living life while he goes through this on his own. He looks better than before right now and basically the swelling is at its lowest so far. He gets moody from time to time but I would have to grade him with an A on that topic.
A few days ago, we just received a delivery for 20 boxes of fluids that are put to use for filtering particles out of his blood. If I heard right he has to do this 3-4 times a day. I will catch him someday when he gets started with doing it. I actually don't think he has began the treatment at home.

Sorry to hear about his kidney failure. It could be from anything, poor diet, heroin use, diabetes, genetics, etc. Dialysis sucks, it's such a drag on your day and life, and his mood swings are totally acceptable lol. The edema can also be from congenital heart failure, so I guess the kidney part is the best of the evils (thought none would be better) and hopefully they either start back up or he gets a new one soon.

Crazy thing is before he was a blue collared work horse. All he did was work. Back in the day he liked to gamble and my mom went nuts about it. Then he cut all drinking and gambling.
The only thing I can think is that stress or basically genetics caused this and I have a higher risk of getting this later too. For some reason I think stressed caused it but I don't know about that either. Genetics is the best guess. Never did drugs (that I know of).
Luckily guy is insured by his work basically and should be until this is over. He's applying for social security because of his condition getting whatever he can benefit from right now. Crazy how this happens, its really like a wake up call. My oldest brother is kind of the bad kid in our family and I can't imagine him stealing again and buying meth with his crazy ass impulses. I would rage out.

I thought I'd update this thread holy crap its been a long road but dad had a transplant about a month back and it didn't work right away ... so now though its started waking and its at that point in the recovery .
First transplant too and the disease hes got is FSGS disease and there's a chance it could reoccur though its a primary disease rather than secondary.
It's been a big relief since the transplanted kidney started to function. There were other patients and theirs was working right away. Just glad we'll see some progress out of it since the kidney started making urine. Be nice if it lasts!

Well, I'll look up FSGS, but that's awesome you've updated this. One of my good friends is actually suffering with renal insufficiency and it blows. Glad to hear his transplant went well. He's probably on Celcept (I believe that's the spelling). Best wishes
