Hi Drake,
Very late here in N. Cali this year. Last year my wife, kids and I picked several pounds on Mother's Day and it was clear that some of them had been up for many days. This year, nothing at all is showing except for the Gyromitra's. They usually show up a week or so before I start seeing morels.
I have picked a total of 17 so far, from my ultra-early spots, but even they are a disappointment. Lack of rain after temps finally got right for fruiting stunted the growth of the one's that popped up, and prevented the abundant flush that I usually enjoy.

i just spend a lot of time in the woods. after a while you just get an eye for morel habitat. only reason i stopped picking today was because sun went down. going back out when the sun rises tomorrow.

you don't really have any indicators of morels?? what kinda tree's do you look for???? Psssss Don't tell if you don't wanna - just trying to pic your brain on what those wicked blacks like best around here the key is old elms and dead elms - 99% of the time you go to one and there is at least one grey or yellow -or good spots flush some nice patches

Wow. That's a beautiful morel haul! Congrats! The last ones I found I stuffed with cream cheese, chives, parsley and black trumpet flakes...try that if you get the chance.

Beech trees, in mossy areas, often near streams. Fairly shady areas. Sometimes with pine.

July and August. You might even find P. caerulipes in the same habitat around that time.

Make a mixture of salmon and some other good stuff like spices and green onions and salt and cheese. Stick it into the morels from the bottom with a chop stick. Dip them in butter and BBQ them.
