Contamination at the casing stage on first grow :(

Hello everyone ,
I got my first mycofarm a while ago. Followed instructions exactly, got a nice big heavy clean mycelium. I cased it with their vermiculite/polymer casing and left it for 5-7 days. I checked it about 10 minutes ago (the 5th day of casing) and it was dead. I knew it was bad as soon as I picked up the tinfoil wrapped bag because a bad smelling liquid started to leak out. There is lots of this liquid, and it smells quite bad. I have cleared up as much as I could, but I was wondering if there was anything that I could do to prevent contamination at this stage next time? I am rather upset, as this was my first mycology project, and I was beginning to get really very exited as I was getting close to harvesting.
Can't really afford another mycofarm at the moment, but I do have bags of vermiculite and perlite, as well as a liquid culture that was started about two weeks ago and some boxes to try again in, so I guess that all is not lost. Still, pretty bummed about this .
Thanks guys,
Tom
::EDIT::
Upon closer inspection, after pushing some of the casing layer aside, there is what looks like healthy white mycelium beneath it. There is still a bad smell coming from the bad. Is any of this savable? Any ideas anyone?
Thanks again =]

I'd get some manure and till it into a flower bed outdoors in a semi-shady spot. That's the best hope for recovery. You don't need to sterilize or pasteurize the manure if you do this. If you're in a city, you can get bagged cow manure at any store to use. RR

Right, I have taken the mycelium out of the bag and to my surprise, some un-colonised rye grain fell out of the bottom. Using a clean metal blunt knife, I brushed all of this out, and there is about half an inch of the stuff on the bottom. There was a little excess liquid from adding the casing layer. The mycelium looks perfectly healthy apart from the smell. Could the water of started to rot the rye grain but the mycelium was okay? I think I might leave it out to dry slightly before transferring it to the humidity tent, and if it gets worse plant it in the garden.
Would anyone have any more opinions or suggestions?
Thanks again

Also, I am a little worried that my room may now be contaminated (a little liquid spilled onto the floor before I realised what was happening). This worries me because: All of my future projects may get the same containment, and also that mould or bacterium may grow on my carpet (please correct me if this is a ridiculous thing to think xD)
Thanks again, sorry for all the posts ^_^
