Think about how tiny we are ! /flash] Enjoy your time on earth, because we are so insignificant and nothing really matters.

It is hard to truly imagine the scale of the universe with our limited minds, and it still boggles me every time I read or think about it.
I disagree that we are insignificant though. I'll concede that our place in the universe is probably insignificant, but considering the scale of all things in the universe, from quarks and gluons, atoms and molecules, dogs and trees, asteroids, planets, stars, galaxies, and superclusters, humans are actually about right in the middle of the scale as far as size goes in the universe. Subatomic particles are about as small compared to us as galaxy clusters are large.
It's amazing that from our seemingly infinitely limited view of the universe, we have been able to conclude so much about its large scale structure. Our little brains that evolved on the dust speck we call earth are very significant, and it appears they are also incredibly rare and very special.
Certainly not insignificant.

Well it' true that, our brain is the most complex thing known to date in the universe. We are basically the only formm of existence capable of conscience after all.But maybe there is another life form elsewhere in the universe more complex than us. Also, who's to say that we are in the middle of the big picture. maybe the actual scale of the universe is infinite and there is no real''middle''.Maybe...

Well, it's pretty safe to say that the universe is indeed not of an infinite size. Obler's Paradox would be a big problem if it were. Consider what would happen if the universe was infinite. That would mean there are an infinite number of stars, and what would happen to all the light from all those stars? Well, it would mean that every single point in the night sky would be filled with stars, with no breaks because at some point out there in out 'infinite' universe, there would be a star emitting photons.. The night sky would be as bright as the sun.
We know the sky is dark, thus we know the universe is finite.
In addition to the dark sky, we also know the universe is expanding. You cannot expand infinity.
I may have this explanation a little off, but I am pretty loaded, and not an expert.

Well, maybe the universe is expanding like a balloon. When you fill a balloon with air, the volume is expanding but the balloon remain finite. And maybe there is an infinity of universes similar to ours.

That's actually a pretty good analogy. You can imagine a balloon with metal beads attached to it. The metal beads represent galaxies (or galaxy clusters), and as the volume of the universe expands, the beads all move away from all the other beads.
If you are really interested in this stuff (and not just stoned philosophizing), you should check out some popular science books on cosmology, it's fucking fascinating stuff!

I spend a lot of my spare time on cosmology forums and while the maths are way above me, I do enjoy gleaming the material that is broken down for people like myself. And to think some people don't spend more than 30 seconds throughout their entire life thinking of such things..the lack of interest or care is almost just as fascinating to me.

This is one of my favorite pictures, and favorite excerpt from Sagan, it puts our actions as a species in an entirely different frame of mind for me. The stupid shit we squabble over seems ridiculous after really thinking about what Sagan wrote.

We will always be here in the universe physically whether it be by our decaying odor, breaking down into carbon or being maggot grub. Its just our consciousness that will be forever lost, which is very difficult to live with.

Why would not conciousness break down just like physical matter and become one with THE conciousness?

No I really liked that explanation, makes total sense.
Edit: I wonder if that would work for gravity too? like if the universe were infinite would we (and everything for that matter) be torn apart immediately?
Or would the infinite amount of gravity from every angle balance out and actually keep us together?

Yea, your thought is right. The force of gravity is a vector, meaning it has a direction. Vectors add such that one pointing left plus one pointing right equals zero. Only if there is an imbalance do you feel a force.
