Dried subs going bad?
    #14408969 - 05/06/11 07:56 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I've got a whole lot of subs drying out at the moment.
Some of the caps have started turning black and I'm unable to tell if it's just dirt or if they're going bad.

This is a dried one that appears normal

And this is one of the suspected bad ones.

If it is just dirt, what's the best way to remove it? It doesn't rub off when I scratch my finger across it.

Thanks for the reply.

I guess it doesn't matter too much if it's just dirt then. I was just worried they were rotting.

I think it's unlikely if they were completely bereft of moisture. I'm pretty sure any pathogens would require moisture in order to survive.

you should wash the dirt off.... before you dry them that is.  :Awemush:

You should be able to brush the dirt off of them.

That looks like a purple fuzz to my eyes on picture two.

The "purple fuzz" on picture 2 is probably fallen spores . Maybe dirt. If it doesn't scratch off then it's probably just a stain from the spores .. Most likely, it was dried like this.

I would agree that they are probably spores from other mushrooms when they were clumped together.  I have some cyans that were nearly black because they were underneath larger specimens.

Or it could be dirt, lol.

Were they cracker dry before they started going like that? as in the stem snaps if you bend it? or do you think it could have had more than 10-15% moisture left in it?

To my (rather inexperienced) eyes it looks like purple fuzz, but if they were cracker dry I probably wouldn't worry about it.

If they're still in the middle of the drying process, maybe leave the ones that look like that out and don't let them dry anymore, but continue to dry the normal ones. If the purple fuzz stuff spreads on the ones you stop drying, probably mold.

I've dried many subs, many of which had spores dropped on the caps, although when dried they just took on a black/brown color in the area where the spores were dropped, it's never looked like the second picture.

Is this purple fuzz stuff bad?

So the stems will literally snap in half if dried correctly?
I've had some drying for almost 2 weeks now and the stems don't snap.
They've been drying in a dark wooden box at room temp (varies between 12 - 23 degrees) which has fresh airflow.

I've placed the 30 or so subs I found today under my bed to see if there's any difference once dried.

Seeing as the drying process was over two weeks, I'd definitely bet that its mold. I'm not sure if its bad for you but is it worth a fungal infection? If your in nz and aus they're everywhere so you can just go out and find some more :sun: but if they're very hard to get where you are I suppose it's up to your own judgement. We breathe spores in everyday, and our immune system protects against them, but that looks like a lot of mold...up to you.

I dry them by putting them on paper towels, with a fan blowing on them, they get to about 10-15% moisture within 24-48 hours, then i put them in a lunchbox or jar, half filled with silicon gel (they're these beads that absorb moisture, they're in kitty litter, its the same stuff that comes in beef jerky packets) with a piece of paper separating the silicon gel and the mushies, as long as its airtight, the silicon gel will absorb the remaining moisture within a few days to a week, i always keep it in there for two weeks because sometimes the stem will snap, but once u put it into a jar without silicon, some remaining moisture that was in the middle of the cap spreads throughout it, its usually not in danger of molding (won't mold when under 10% moisture) but the less moisture the longer it'll last potency-wise.

Thanks for the quick response and info.
I have 109 dried at the moment which me and 4 friends are going to do tomorrow. If they aren't keen on eating the possibly moldy ones I guess I'll just throw them out.

I'll get myself some silicon gel for sure so the next lot will hopefully stay in perfect condition.

All good

http://www.shroomery.org/10611/Drying Some excellent information here regarding drying using dessicants, it took me a while to find silicon gel kitty litter (eventually found it in a supermarket), you can also use DampRid and Drierite but they're more toxic so you have to be more careful keeping the desiccant and shrooms from touching.

When completely cracker dry, they've lasted me 6 months with no noticeable reduction in potency (stored in a glass jar with a few of the silicon gel packets from beef jerky), I'm guessing they could last up to a year under those conditions.

Happy shrooming! :mushroom2:

Hmmmm... grey dirt?
Surely they are either dry or rotting after 2 weeks?..
They still might bend a little when they're dry, but there should be some kind of snapping sound when they brake.
Try cutting the caps off the stems before u dry them, i find they dry quicker when i do this.

I've had weilii dry exactly like this.... even worst. I still don't think it's mold but hey, better safe then sorry.
