Do you remember without having to think very hard about it? how about three meals ago? Why dont we remember things like this? I think its because we are in a sort of dream state thats very similar to actual dreaming, we only remember the last bits of a dream just like we only remember the last few meals, there are lots of things like this that we take notice but dont accknowledge consciously. Ive heard that the way to wake up in a dream is to realize you are dreaming, but the only way to really do that is to fulley and honestyl accknowledge a normal experience, your everyday experiences of reality. But we dont do that, we dont go around in dreams asking ourselvs "what is 'this'?"
Try going through you day asking yourself "am I awake" at least every hour, and dont just ask it but feel it, experience it, accknowledge it. What would society be like if people did this when they walked past a stranger on the street or consciously engaged the person at the cash register?

I do always ask myself whether I'm dreaming. Unfortunately I never quite seem to catch myself in the act.
Life is dreamlike in a lot of ways, though. So many details are lost, and everything is so random.

one of the only ways I can ever realize I am dreaming is by noticing something very out of place
like a boot on my lamp stand, or a chainsaw in my drawer. Something that just would not be there in real life.
Unfortunately, my attention is so caught up in everything going on, that I usually only notice in retrospect
they say the human brain is made to filter out unnecessary information (to varying degrees).
This is comparable to a baseball pitcher focusing only on the pitch, and blocking out the taunting crowd.
Dreams are chaotic when your life is chaotic, it seems. If you have a personal issue, that will probably surface in your dream. If you have an arm growing out of your head IRL, in your dreams you might be worried about that. Whatever the issue, it's another distraction
you get so involved in it, feeling that it is real and important, you never even notice the signals that tell you this is a dream, such as your baby crib being right next to your bed
i guess the biggest reason I hardly ever realize I'm dreaming is because I've got too many personal issues in my life that cause self-reflection.
I can slip consciously from awake to dreaming but I sort of quit practicing that because I forgot about it once noise from roommates tvs became an issue luckily at least I don't care what I ate 7 meals ago. I remember the most relevant things and try not to be absorbed by the details of what I ate 7 meals ago, if it wasn't anything unhealthy or significant

I eat 6 meals a day. I remember every meal every day. In fact I think about it very often through the day.
Today I had mcdonalds for breakfast. Fish, potato, and broccoli for lunch. Steak, potato, green beans for lunch 2. Steak potato, green beans for dinner. 2 hardboiled eggs and buttered noodles for dinner 2. A half gallon of 2 % milk for my other meal.

I don't think it's a matter at all of whether or not we acknowledge something consciously, especially when it's a question of eating meals, which almost never happens unconsciously. You're speaking about the ability to remember, and memory is a cognitive process, not an instantly-accessible state. Any act of remembrance is constituted by cognitive calculations, comparisons, thinking. The nature of how our memory functions, how quickly or accurately we can remember something, the types of things we remember more fully or completely, is all based on motivational factors and relevance. If someone were keen on remembering their every meal, they'll be far more successful in doing so compared to someone who doesn't intend to remember, for a long duration, what they ate on a particular day.

In the weekend i slow down to a more comfortable rhythm. I am more consciously active and engage more with what i experience. I the week my life is routine and there is a time for everything.
However, I'm not aware of any difference in my ability to remember details that happened a while back in either case.
Perhaps the reason for this dream-state-like experience is the never ceasing stream of thought. Well most of the time unless i actively meditate and am aware of what goes on in my mind vividly. funny that, but during an hour of plenty of thought i can recall most of what i was thinking about. Yet, during an hour of little or no thought, it seems as if nothing has happened at all. actually, nothing did happen but the passage of time.
Back to question, the things i remember best are those that made the biggest impression. so perhaps, the necessary meals that keep me going aren't that intense. Or do i lack the presence of mind to fully experience them?
It's a good question.

Memories are also self-reinforcing, that is, the more often you make a certain recollection, the easier and more ingrained that recollection becomes. I've noticed there is also an increased sense of vividness, but this is probably something like baseline confabulation.
It's kind of hard to remember a single time at the cash register if you're constantly there. The events taking place at the cash register would have to be exceptional in and of themselves; for example, if the register spontaneously exploded, or if your cashier was Adolf Hitler.
By the way, this thread inspired me to go and get a palpitation-inducing fast-food breakfast.
