If you could donate to 1 charity, which one would it be?

The Slap-a-Ho-Foundation. They routinely serve punishments for skanky female sexual behavior, thus indirectly reducing overpopulation, waste production, and ultimately hunger rates.

I wouldn't donate to charity because the money would never get to where it's needed. I'd use it to buy something to help me.

Heifer.org is an excellent charity BUT! Its important to pick an animal that eats a kind of food that humans don't eat.

So don't donate chickens! Chickens eat grain, grain that could be eaten by people. If you feed an animal to raise it, the ratio is approximately 10 food calories form their staple forms 1 calorie of meat. With chickens the margin is probably narrower cause they lay a lot of eggs, but still the net result is that because of your chickens, there are less humanly edible food calories in your third world country than there are with no chickens. Something that eats hay/straw/grazes is excellent cause that turns non-humanly edible calories into humanly edible food calories.

The charity I donate most money to each month is Amani Childrens Home in Moshi, Tanzania.

Quote:

Welcome - Karibu!

Amani Children’s Home is dedicated to the protection of Tanzania’s most vulnerable population: street children and AIDS orphans. It is estimated that there are 2.5 million orphaned children in Tanzania.

Since its founding by Tanzanians in 2001, Amani has rescued hundreds of children from the perils of life on the streets, where they face a high risk of HIV transmission, malnutrition, and abuse.

Amani, which means “peace” in Swahili, provides healthy food, education, counseling and medical care for every child who turns to us for help.

Just as little as 29 dollars month is ALL they need to pick a kid off the street, house them, offer medical aid, clothe them, feed them, educate and counsel them. Thats less than one dollar a day for you! Thats a VERY tangible result for your buck. Its a grassroots Tanzanian NGO, you donate directly to them so all your money gets put to work in an economy where your buck stretches further than just about anywhere else in the world. They have outreach programs to help kids still on the streets and family reuniting porgram to track down family and have orphans live with their relatives again.

Think about it guys, browse the site, read the stories, see the happy faces, be inspired. Donations on ANY level are welcome, be it onetime or preferably sustained.

Theres standard supporter accounts starting as low as $9 a month! What are we even talking about people! Nine bucks!  Well it goes a long long way there.

$10 School uniform for one child.

$25 Sheets and blankets for two children at Amani.

$50 provides medical care for an average of 35 children living on the streets.

$100 Three healthy meals for all the children at Amani for one day.

$200 First semester at Secondary School.

Go there now! Its not a gloom and doom charity, it is full of hope and positive stuff. Even if you dont donate, you'll still come away positively impressed, promise!

RESCUING CHILDREN, RESTORING HOPE, TRANSFORMING LIVES

I would rather donate goods than cash, almost all the cash going to charities
ends up in the pockets of execs and marketers even though they have a huge
volunteer staff, my pops donated shoes to goodwill, a friend of his was
closing a shoe store, what didnt sell was given to pops to donate to a
charity, he opted for goodwill, more than 1000 pairs of shoes all new in the
box, he was delivering the last truckload and saw the volunteers in the back
slicing the sides of the shoes and tossing them in a dumpster, they cut them
so no one could dig them out and wear them

when choosing a charity, first thing to do is examine their financials
carefully, look to see how much of the money is going to the aid they're
supposed to be giving, then look to see how much is actually getting to
the people they're supposed to be helping... I think the shit will
surprise you that it's typically less than 5% actually benefiting those in
need. then of course you really need to look at the charity, do you think
the One Laptop Per Child charity is really a worthwhile cause? I mean they
want to give laptops to kids in 3rd world nations, many that have no
electricity, many whom are starving. in the situation of the kids in these
nations, would you rather have 500lbs of beans or a computer?

the Salvation Army takes most of the clothing donations, ships the crap to
China where the clothes are cut into 'mixed rags', packaged and resold
here in the US for about $8/lb... fuck the salvation army, put some
americans to work cutting up perfectly good clothing into grease rags
since they arent providing the clothes for a reasonable purpose like for
wear, why sell the shit if the system isnt all about getting the cash

I was curious, I know some kids that are raising funds to donate to a charity and they weren't sure where to donate.

For instance, to donate to the recent tornado disaster, what would be the best option in your opinion?

Good to know, my sister gave me a kiva gift card a few years ago.  Seemed really cool and progressive, money going directly to the people you choose.

After reading the wiki I'm not entirely sure that they are a bad business, but they are a business, so people are going to have to suffer from the inconvenience of higher interest from higher risk loans.  But if they don't want to pay that interest rate I guess they could continue living in an underdeveloped country and deal with those hardships rather than continuing their countries development.

Also, the money you donate may not go directly to those you choose, but at least you can look up who money is going to. And as far as the money going to support bloodsports...entertainment is a large part of developed countries, of course its going to be big in developing countries.  Boxing/MMA could be considered a bloodsport, no one is upset and I'm sure people donate to associated leagues, why can't we donate to help a league of people in developing countries?

and Kiva can't be held responsible for their partners mistakes/shortcomings.

Anyways, I've defended them way more than I intended to, but I'm still going to continue to donate that $25 until it stops coming back to me.

i don't have any names of specific charities, but if i had a lot of income to dump into three different areas it would be as follows:

1. regenerative medicine/stem cell research
2. cancer research
3. endlessly renewable energy sources/oil less plastics

Every time I donate to charity, I feel cheap about the amount of giving even though I currently have no income..
