Stupid Morels!!! Or stupid n00b
    #14406394 - 05/05/11 05:29 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I have gone out a couple of time over that last couple of weeks and I can't find any Morels. It has to be that I'm such a n00b that I'm looking in the wrong spots. I can't find any elm trees. All the trees around me are oak and maples and a bunch of others that aren't elm, even though elms grow here.

It could also be that they're not growing yet, but others who hunt morels have already found them in my state. I think I need to find a mycology club. I just want to find some this season before they're gone.

Morels are very very tricky to find. some people go years and years and years without finding them. ive been hunting for years and just found my first morels today. they blend in so well. and they change location every season. just stick with it and dont get deMORELized haha.

i found about 5 brown paper bags full(altogether) in 1 set of woods and this is my first

just make sure you arent hunting somewhere that floods and has water sitting on it for weeks

and once you find one, get on the ground and look around the ground at eye level and you will find lots more you wouldn't otherwise see

My state park and nature sanctuary have swamps in them. One person told me that they have found them in the state park.

I wish I could tell my pine trees apart and all the other trees. I know my maples and the oak trees from their leaves, hickory nut, apple, and probably a few others that I can't think of. I just didn't realize how hard it would be to identify a tree in order to try to find a mushroom.

I was always told dead elms, the ones I found today actually found me! But yea, they were under some pretty big evergreens, what kind? Not sure, but I'll happily do some research to help.

you can tell pinetrees, go out in the winter. the only thing that has leaves are pines. thats why they are called evergreens.

i have found slim pickins of morels and ill tell you all that any time i have a "habitat theory" it goes to shit pretty quickly, it is a magical connection. there is no rhyme or reason. keep it up, and dont JUST look for morels, learn some plants too so you can go home with some trout lily bulbs and spring beauty greens and bulbs (sustainably harvested)

I find them under tulip trees, usually about 5 feet from the base.

look for dead or dying trees that the bark has fallen off and is laying on the ground, the tree can be still standing,a stump,or as a fallen log.(dead elm).thats our best spots, but not the only spots.

I have been hunting Morels for 25 years and Ive found them almost everywhere that you wouldn't look, never in wet swampy ground. If they grow in the area then you should find them,However If they dont you will not find them any were.Old farm land is best, eastern slopes are good.Try looking from bottom up,they stand out good that way.

I have a small nature sanctuary near me that has a variety of trees and plants that grow in it as well as a few swamps. I found at least 4 different types of pine, maples, oaks and lots of others. I did get a tree guide from the library and they look pretty distinctive in the book, but when I go out into the woods I am lost as to what they are.

I did find some little brown shrooms that were identified as an Entoloma/Nolanea.

If you are in the Northeast, this is a great book that I found recently:

http://www.amazon.com/Bark-Field-Guide-Trees-Northeast/dp/1584658525/ref=sr_1_2?s=books

It has an identification key based only on tree bark. Great for when the weather is still too cold for leaves and flowers. Unfortunately, ash trees, which morels apparently like a lot, have tricky bark. It can change a lot with the age of the tree. This book has 3 different key paths to reach them!

In my area of IL, the best producers are:
1-Green Ash
2-Elm
3-American Cherry

If you look at the dead leaves around the trees you can also try identifying by the leaves. Also the trees in the woods I go to are so old they all go straight up, so that's why they are a little hard for me to identify. But I'll check and see if the library has that book.

I finally found 4 today. I'm going back in a couple of days to see if the one I left is still there and bigger and to see if more grew.
