THIS IS MY 1000TH POST!!!! and what better way to celebrate my 1000th than by finding my FIRST EVER MORELS!!!! i literally JUST found them. i spotted the little one from about 30 feet away. then i saw the big one behind a shrub. theyre growing from the woodchips outside my apartment building! im so excited, the only other ones i found i accidentally ran over with a lawn mower first. not this time! mmm i cant wait. ive never eaten them before. i ran inside so fast to grab the camera. here are the pics i took.
For your viewing pleasure, my first morels... Morchella elata or a close relative:

any tips and/or suggestions on how to serve them?

Are you looking for morel prints, wisco?
I have a few morel spots in my woods that are producing currently and it wouldn't be that hard to take a print from a big one--or a nice dark one from a few big ones.

sooo just finished cooking and eating those morels. man were they tasty! some of the most flavourful mushrooms ive ever eaten. heres what i did.
after soaking them in the fridge in cold salt water for a couple hours, i sliced them into quarters the long way
then i melted some butter on low heat and sprinkled in a little bit of salt. i tossed in the morels and sprinkled on some pepper. and sauteed them for 10-15 minutes.
i didnt want to taint them with too many other flavours cuz it was my first time. so after they were done i served them with grilled steak and vegetables!
they were so deliccious. i want more. now. haha. m wife loved the taste but didnt like the texture of them. i loved the whole experience. definately looking foreward to finding more!

Sweet!!! Glad you finally got a chance to try the elusive Morel Fry! (And didn't mow them this time ) Also, glad you decided to go 'minimal' on the seasoning so that you had a really pure Morel experience. The first time I tried the Morels I found this season I just fried them up in some Extra Vigin Olive Oil until I got the desired texture - spiced up with just a touch of salt and pepper than BAM -- Heaven. If your girlfriend didn't like the texture try frying them in olive oil on a little higher temp and the Morels will get a nice crispy texture (especially on the 'brain' part). I Have had Morels a few different ways now, and texture has been the biggest thing for me as well, it's hard to get that perfect consistency.
Also, I believe you may have found Morchella importuna, or "Taxon J". That's what I have been finding in my neck of the woods and they look almost identical..

thanks Oreganic. im gonna try using a bit higher heat and cooking them longer next time and/or throwing them on the grill with a vegetable pack. its so hard to tell black morels apart. idk at least theyre all edible! hopefully with this warm weather and rain Vancouver is getting ill find more soon.
