is whey protein really healthy?
    #14392002 - 05/02/11 11:00 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

i mean i know it would obviously be wiser to get your protein from more natural sources like veggies, seeds/nuts, healthy meats, etc.

but what do you guys think about whey protein? is it still a decent way to add more protein to a diet or is it completely worthless?

i was of the understanding that it's basically just the proteins isolated from milk.. so your body would still recognize and be able to put the amino acids to use, correct?

Yup. I think whey protein is also good when trying to build muscle:shrug:

the stuff is super cheap so that one reason its popular. I think 25 kilo bags are 40 bucks IIRC. its been a decade since I bought any for people to share but I think it was less then a dollar a pound maybe around 50 cents.

In most (but not all cases), protein is just protein.  There are many different types, but for the most part your body dissembles and reassembles proteins as it needs.  This is best demonstrated by the observation, "When we eat chicken we don't end up looking like a chicken."
Whey protein is essentially in the same category as chicken.  Sure the structures are different, and they have differing amino acid compositions.  Bbbbuuutttt, our body breaks it all down, takes the amino acids it needs, synthesizes missing amino acids from protein and nonprotein consumed products (our body can synthesize 12 of the 20 required amino acids), reassembles into proteins and puts that shit where it sees fit (its a little more complicated then that, but its the quick picture).
Because of the general interchangeability of amino acids, where we get our proteins/aminos isn't very important.  Furthermore, saturating your system with protein doesn't make your muscles grow faster, as you simply shit out what your body doesn't need/want.
So, if you don't eat much protein/meat, grab the whey.  But don't supplement your diet with an additional protein source unless you figure out how much you really need (since most of us consume too much as it is).

With the exception of grammatical corrections, everything I say is completely false and without foundation.

the question actually should be what are you using it for? what do YOU want to gain from using whey protein? if we knew why u want to know if it works then we can probably give more advice or maybe a better alternative

I think from what I heard it was but I just really sold it to meatheads. I would order up a bunch in group buys for meatheads that I knew along with other items.

i'm not trying to bulk up or anything, i'm just using it to help rebuild muscle tissue quicker.. in both my brain and my body. protein is necessary for neuronal synthesis i hear

informative, thank you. i definitely don't overdo it, i use about one scoop a day max generally. i'm guessing i probably don't even need that on some days..

I eat a very complete diet and weigh everything I make, and I still have to supplement with whey sometimes.

If you are protein deficient, whey is great. If you get enough protein, whey is an expensive way to make you fat.

There is a lot of debate over the protein craze.  After talking to quite a few people from different supplement stores and reading quite a bit on it...this is the opinion I've formed.

Whey protein isolate seems like the all around best protein to take (unless you are a really skinny guy trying to bulk up).  Try to find one with a glutamine complex.  If you are regularly working out and trying to make strength gains and muscle mass gains it is said that you should take as many grams of protein a day as your target weight.

For example,

5 weeks ago I started at 177lbs.  My target weight is 160 lbs.  I began an intensive weight training and cardio training regimen.  I keep very active all week, with intense 1 hour work outs 4 to 5 days a week.  With this activity level, I should be getting 160 grams of protein a day.  To put that in perspective, a chicken breast is roughly 25-30 grams of protein.

Some people's requirements may be more.  This is where whey protein supplements can be quite beneficial.  It is best to consume 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes after a good workout with a good carboyhydrate source.  A good ratio I like to follow is 2:1.  60 grams of carbs roughly, for 30 grams of protein.  That's a very good recovery drink.  If you can't afford the powder...use chocolate milk!

I now weigh 169 after 5 weeks, I'm noticeably more chiseled and defined and I'm getting a lot stronger. I take two scoops of isosensation(my favourite protein powder) and sometimes I add a scoop of vega sport some time in the day.  I also eat a lot of nuts, beans, legumes and tons of veggies.  You need to eat lots of veggies.

Most important of all...make sure to drink tons of water.  Your kidneys need it when processing all that protein.  Your muscles need it too.  Don't forget to drink lots of water.

And more protein is not always better.  Your body can only effectively process roughly 30 grams every 2 hours.  So stay away from the gimmicky powders that boast more than that in a scoop.

This is just my opinion I've formed from the information I've dug up.  And it works well for me.

You only need the supplement proteins if your lifting. It would be a waste of taking it if your not lifting. You could just eat the food you need instead.

If you believe the corporate farm protein brainwashing fake or misinterpreted research about protein myth check out these guys:

Robert Cheeke, a famous vegan bodybuilder. He has been vegan since 16, and eats a low protein diet.

Joel Kirkilis

There is no medical term for protein deficiency. Fruits and vegetables contain all the essential amino acids in the proper balance. "The obvious truth is: there is enough protein in plants to grow an elephant, horse, or hippopotamus. Certainly there is enough protein to grow relatively small people." http://drmcdougall.com/med_hot_protein.html
Human milk contain 5-6% of their calories from protein. If you eat a proper diet with enough whole fruits and vegetables you will get around the same percentage.

If a to low protein diet is very difficult to obtain (eating refined foods...like cookies, sweets), a high protein diet is very easy to get and can have serious repercussions on you health according to many health specialists (check out Dr Colin Campbell)

Good luck!

Whey protein is cool, find a brand you enjoy and glup down a few shakes a day between meals. Excellent.

Why?
- Because if your body demands more food its nicer to give
- 5 meals a day (3 normal meals + shakes) and strength training, yield a whole pletora of physical and mental benefits.
- They taste super nice (I take Myofusion by gaspari, super taste, digestive enzymes included, non toxic sweeteners, chocolate is cool, and so are the other flavours)
- Pack muscle, loose fat
- They're cheap
- They're delicious

Lol all jokes aside, how well would this bloodline be in a post-apocalyptic modern society world? Would it compare to the Rambo/MacGyver bloodline? :ahahaha:
