Invasion of the TICKS

|

I don't know if it's just my area but here in PA ticks are continuously getting worse every year - particularly this year. I think 3 or 4 people already have Lyme disease. I was talking to a guy I work with who is in his late 50's; he said when he was a kid if you got a tick it was pretty strange and they were in the woods all the time. Now, almost every other time I go hiking you can bet I'll have at least one tick; especially if I don't stick to the trails and blaze my own.
What the fuck? Fuck ticks. Mosquitoes are one thing, but ticks are fucking freaky.

KILL IT WITH FIREEE!

I fucking hate ticks!
One time I was up north camping as a young lad and I went to take a piss and one of those things were attached to the underside of my dick
My grandpa got lyme disease as well and almost killed him because the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. One of his friends recommended to get tested for lyme disease and sure enough, that was it.

Holy shit, I once had a tick on my dick.
It was after a night of heavy drinking around the campfire. Well, I got really fucking drunk and fell asleep with this bottle of Disaronno. I wake up the next day, go to take a piss and there is a tick on the top of my dick. Now, it was not the cusp of the dick but it was still up top. Man I just look at this thing, take three deep breaths and pull it off. Fucking terrifying. Thank teh lawd it was not there long and was easy to get off. What the fuck.
Even worse is another guy who was there that night got a tick on the cusp of his top-dicktoral region. Scary.

I fucking hate ticks too. They're the one thing that, upon mention, I will immediately without hesitation say "I fucking HATE ticks". Every. Time.

I would much rather risk the very slim chance of getting lyme disease over spraying poison all over my clothes.

I went camping a couple of years ago and as I was taking a shower I noticed one on my balls. Pretty annoying to say the least.
I've had one in my butt crack as well.

if you dont want ticks, get guinea hens. had them for a few years, probably about 20-30 that had free roam of the area directly around my house all the way to the woods on an all sides. we suffered no ticks at all those years. the only dogs that got them were the ones who ventured farther than the guinea hens went.
we already have a shitload of bats and dragonflies populate 3-4 ponds that are less than 100 feet from my house so the mosquito population is pretty low too.

I had the pleasure of the smaller ones burying into my legs and nutsack because I sat down in a field with cattle in it.
By the time I realised I just saw loads of these tiny little spider looking things running over me, then I realised they were ticks and was screaming ripping my clothes off, brushing off ticks and running out of the field all at the same time.
Its fucking disgusting sat there with a little cotton noose 1 by 1 gently trying to get these parasites to get out of me

just pull them off. i had one really close to my dick.
they're said to like tight areas, like behind your balls on your leg. i had one there before.
i've also had lyme disease before. all you have to do is take antibiotics for a while

The first time I ever had a tick, I came home with 18 of them on me...I went for a school field trip in 4th grade, we stuck to the trails the entire time but somehow lots of kids still came back with an absurd amount of ticks. Most of the ones I had came out pretty easily, but a few were burrowed in already....
During this time of the year I always make sure to check my self and my dog immediately as soon as I get home after walking around outdoors. I straight up strip down naked and check every square inch of my body. Both my dog and I have already had a few this year...
And I live in California, I can't imagine how bad they are through out other parts of the US/world....You guys have any tips or advise for pulling them out?...I know lots of people have their own certain tricks or ways.

Only ever had one large one on me I noticed a black bump and little legs wiggling at me just below my belly button. That sucked and I am pretty sure its head was in my skin,
I have had a couple little guys, the ones you can pretty much brush off.

speaking of nail polish and shit that gets on your skin, let's not forget the microscopic piece of shit mite known as the chigger. i hate ticks with a passion (just had a couple on me the other day, in fact) but chiggers...fuck...i can't stand those mother fuckers.

They go for the dick cuz its got big veins it closer to the skin
Also you should not squeeze them as this is like injecting yourself with tick juice
The best method I read online was to make a noose out of a single strand of cotton and gently pull it tight around the tick... then you need to sit there gently tugging the tick for a couple of minutes until it lets go and comes out. Its not easy but I managed to get all of mine out and only 1 I fucked up and the head got left inside me cuz I pulled to hard on the cotton
This works on the small black ones anyway. My friend had a huge tick, it looked like a snail and it was on his neck!!!

You guys, you should not use alcohol to remove ticks. It is not proper. The use of alcohol can cause them to puke up their tick juice into your blood and that is bad. Use tweezers and make sure you grab it by the head. If you grab it by the body it will puke tick juice inside you and that would be bad. Only 1 in 10 tick bites lead to Lyme disease. The tick must be attached to you for 24 hours before infection will occur. If detected early Lyme disease can be eradicated through antibiotics. Just make sure you remove them properly.

This. Using alcohol will increase your chances of contracting Lyme's. Also, the chances of getting Lyme's are almost negligible as long as you remove the tick within the first 24 hours. After that, it settles deeper into your skin and the risks increase rapidly.

More importantly, if you yank it by the body and the tick has had time to bury itself into the skin (>24 hrs after picking it up), the head will remain lodged in the skin. I've had this happen once, and it took me about two days and some slight DIY surgery to get all the tick bits out of me.

Yes, permethrin is a CNS toxin...but it is not easily absorbed through the skin, and is actually not very toxic to most mammals or birds.

Now you know.

If you just pull them out there is a chance that you will squish their guts and get tick shit into your bloodstream which you obviously do not want. Also their proboscis or whatever its called can remain stuck in your skin. The oil thing might work

No don't burn em, it doesn't work on the small black ones and you'll end up with bits of burnt rotten tick still inside you.
I swear by the cotton noose I tried every method and its the only one that actually gets the whole tick out intact.
You can still burn him alive afterwards if you want to

never had that happen, not even once in my many years of tick pulling, more often than not I take a little skin with the tick when I pull them, and I've never had one back out because I've oiled it or used some other crap that's supposed to make them back out and that's probably because they simply bite and suck and it sucks when they bite... if you've left the tick on long enough for it to get fat, using tweezers or hemostats to get close to it's head is a good idea

Yes this is exactly what Ive come to know. Nail polish was the remedy here in the south but the last time someone in my family had chiggers we did some research and got the lo down facts on those pesky fucks.
When I was a child I use to freak out about getting a tick in my ear.

I keep flea and tick shampoo on hand for dealing with a host of nasties, my kids came home with a warning about head lice, first thing I did was a flea dip followed by the shampoo, they were sent back to their moms and since she did nothing they ended up with the lice, when they came back I went through the process again... it's far cheaper than the crap they sell for lice and it seems to be more effective, the shampoo works on most of the annoying pests

chiggers and the lore around them is interesting. i did some research on chiggers last year (after living in the south for 20 pluss years and hearing all sorts of conflicting stories about what they actually do when they get on your skin) and found out a few interesting facts.
chiggers are in the mite family. in their early stage (larvae) of life, they need to feed on animal tissue to move on to the next phase. they crawl on your skin.
"Most chigger larvae feed at the site of a hair follicle or pore. Chiggers don't sting like bees or suck blood like mosquitos or ticks, rather they scrape or puncture the skin with bladelike mouthparts, called chelicerae. Once a chigger has an opening, it injects saliva, which contains proteolytic enzymes, to liquify the tissue so it can ingest it.
Our immune system walls off the area where the chigger has injected its saliva, forming a narrow, hardened tube, called a stylostome, through which the chigger feeds, as if through a straw. If nothing interrupts its meal, it will feed for three to four days before dropping off.
Chiggers don't burrow into the skin. Some swelling may slightly envelop a chigger, but the chigger remains on the outside, and all it takes is a slight scratching to remove it. A scratched off chigger will not bite again."
thought it was an interesting read an helped lay to rest all the lore.

I went out to the forest a few days ago and on the drive back one is on my pants. I come home sit down on my bed to take off my shoes, fucking tick on my sock. So i take a shower and change. Next day i see a tick on my bed and wash all my stuff. Then i notice one on the back of my head, ripped that mother fucker off in like negative two seconds. Reading this post has got me all paranoid, im still feeling around my head for anymore. Lots more ticks than i remember in any previous years living in Illinois.
CHIGGERS! Oh the hatred i have for those evil bastards. I have scars on my ankles and legs from a terrible incident years ago. Its that itchy itchy itch that you just automatically scratch.
Poison ivy is just awesome too, im allergic as hell. Got it on my dick last year, god oh god. And everywhere else for that matter. Wasn't able to use that itch stick on the lady for a week. And i couldn't do the alternative as it would inadvertently itch it.

bulls eye rash on its own is enough to signify that you have it, the tests are unreliable
mine came back positive though
its fairly well documented the pattern of detection/nondetection
like people having the rash, not getting diagnosed by a doctor, it re-appears years later and paralyzes the person. its a classic phenomena

that bullseye rash is a shitty indicator of lymes disease because there's a host of other things that can cause it including infections and spider bites, erythema multiforme is one of those infections and even ringworm can cause it

I've noticed a surge of ticks in Illinois this year too. Been through the forest twice so far this year and have had to flick 19 ticks off my clothes and body. I've never been sucked by one, but last year, I only remember flicking a couple off my clothes the entire season.

I mean I hate ticks, but pulling them out doesnt hurt THAT fucking bad. You guys are babies if your whining about the pain of pulling out a tick... wtf lol its fine... pull it out and then set it aflame and watch it burst.
But yeah ticks suck. I'm in the north east and ticks are EVERYWHERE its at least not this bad during the summer. During the summer you might encouter 1 or 2 every so often, but now you'll go out to the woods for half an hour and come back with at least five. Staying on paths and trails too... I don't understand.
I don't remember it every being this bad though. For example last year, I remember finding like ten ticks on me the whole spring / summer season, but I've easily found that many on me so far this year.

They don't hurt when you pull em out.
What sucks is the fact you don't know they are there unless you find it, happen to notice or maybe scratch it. They can be there for days and you would never know.........

we already have a shitload of bats and dragonflies populate 3-4 ponds that are less than 100 feet from my house so the mosquito population is pretty low too.
good advice, ticks suck! I havent necessarily seen a huge population explosion tho. Theyve always been a problem for people and pets alike for folks who live in the woods/country and enjoy themselves outside. You just gotta be careful, ya know after awhile you'll get sensitive to them, I feel them crawling on me and I almost always get them nowadays before they can stick there head inside me and suck my goodness out.

yeah same, after having spent so much time in the woods, you get really sensitive to them, its the subtle lil tickling of the hairs that give them away, its kind of subliminal in a way, cause you really dont feel them but you feel them.

I went for a walk in the forest with my gf and dog like 2 weeks ago, soooo many fucking ticks. Out of all my years camping ive noticed maybe like 2 ticks on me. This year is insane.
During the walk we each had like 5 ticks latch onto us. Before we got into the car, 2 or 3 more on each of us. Did a thorough inspection before getting into the car, thought we were all good. On the ride back, i pulled 2 off my neck, one off my jeans.
Went home thoroughly bathed my dog with some expensive tick shampoo and brushed him out. And checked and rechecked him and ourselves. Then my gf and i went in took a shower and changed clothes. Well a few days later i see a fucking tick on my bed, than an hour later another and another. I cant emphasize enough how thoroughly i checked my dog before letting him in the house after the walk. So i check him again, i comb through and find four on him.
So i go to war: wash and brush my dog again,i wash my bed sheets twice, vacuum my bed, clean the shit out of everything around, quarantine my poor dog. Even after doing all this shit i still find another tick on my bed 2 days later. I Go to war again.... All is well for over a week... Just last night in bed i scratch my leg and one is latched on my fucking thigh! I killed the fucker and thought, i dont even care anymore im going to sleep. Of course i slept like shit, had like a psychotic thing going on with every little itch.
tltr- Ticks are in my fucking house, THEY MUST DIE

Yea dude, VA has been getting hit hard as hell these past years.
Literally we have tick warnings in our parks, because they are fucking everywhere. Just look at the tall pieces of grass along the trails, those fuckers are flailing their legs about trying to grab a hold. I literally have seen like 5 ticks on a single stalk of grass.

Last year I got bit, and found out by itching my waist (literally the lower belt area). It was so fucking nasty, it was near my dick. I flipped a shit.

I fucking hate ticks. I had a shitload in GA as a kid, but I hardly had anything to worry about there, Lyme disease is very rare there. When I lived there I had up to 11 ticks embedded after one hike(even after using 35% DEET), and never got sick.
This spring I've been hiking 3-4 times in the North Jersey area and I feel like a bag of assholes. Granted I have rheumatoid arthritis/fibromyalgia, but this pain and fatigue is different. Waking up is almost impossible, joints are swollen as hell, I'm nauseous, have a headache, getting weird hive like spots on my arms and legs, feel weak and fatigued... Like I said feel like shit warmed over.
Went to my doc and he thinks I have Lyme disease. I've had every symptom but a fever. I also live in one of the areas with the highest incidence of Lyme disease in the US, so he has good reason to be suspicious of Lyme. He put me on amoxicillin 3x a day for 3 weeks just to be safe, if the test comes back negative I'll quit taking the antibiotics. At this point, I just kinda hope it's Lyme because it can be killed off easily. At least that would let me know why I've been feeling to shitty lately.
Ticks fucking suck, evil little parasite carrying bastards.

i had chiggers last year, fuck they drove me nuts. I was glad to get back to the desert. Here, you just have to watch out for spiders and scorpions (at least out in the country.) I worked at WHite Sands before, we had a mission at like 1am, we had a porta-potty by our site, this one other radar tech, an old guy retired from the air force, went out to take a shit and got bit on his nuts by a black widow spider.

I live in Canada (Ontario), And spend a shit ton of time outside.
I have never even seen a tick....
I guess they are more rare up here?
This thread made me itchy, and i actually checked myself for ticks a couple times, haha.

I just found a tiny little tick smaller than a sesame seed dug into the back side of my toenail monday. It was already starting to blister monday when I found it, at this point it is a huge purple oozing thing the size of a pea. It doesn't hurt, just itches a little sometimes.
I'm going to a walk-in clinic later today. I bet they give me antibiotics. Damn thing's hideous.
