Good Choice For First Time Casing
    #1440536 - 04/08/03 09:34 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Hey, this is my first time growing, and so far things are going great. I'm just wondering if I should bother casing on this first batch seeing as I'm new to the whole process, or if casing really isn't all that tough. Anyone ever followed the
"Casing for Dummies" tek ? (http://www.mycotopia.net/teks/hongus.html ) If so, have you had success with it?

first batch of what.? PF-TEK cakes.? If this is your first time i would suggest letting some of them fruit from cakes and case the others if you must case on your first attempt...

It seems to be largely in your moisture content for peat casing - vermiculite on cakes is simple enough. The peat casing will be damp but not at all "wet" - once you have a really good case run the moisture thing will stick with you, or at least it did for me. Seems easy now. When right it will run very fast and thick, you have to stop it short before it comes through the top more than about 10-15%.
I'm using peat casing on straw and grain, and verm on cakes right now and finally got the mix and moisture right. I think casing is beneficial, even if I case only the top and pick all sides (as in straw cakes).
Best wishes! What's your casing recipe?

it seems you have done your homework thus far.
kramer says casing for dummies is what he did with all his cakes first go round and was not disapointed.it's up to you its not that hard really and casings are easy to maintain
