Opened my mail to find...

Holy bejesus! So I nonchalantly flipped through my mail...catalog...and a letter. Didnt recognize the address...thought someone I forgot about sent me a print or something. The letter looked like it was typed on an old school typerwritter and came out of Cali. I thought "wouldnt it be lovely if someone decided to send me a sheet of acid"
I look through it, it looks bill shaped. Im thinking it's the ER in SF trying to collect their moneys again.
I start to tear it open and it looks like a check. Im thinkin "oh boy, payday! probably like 20 bucks Im getting refunded on something, some rebate...i get past the one dollars and 16 cents to see "hundred' and think holy shit maybe this is like 200 bucks but it gets better...i see EIGHT in front of the hundred....then i see the word "thousand' and nearly shit my pants. Two thousand, eight hundred dollars and 16 cents and i dont know why im getting it. It's a watermarked cashiers check and everything.
The check is from GA but the letter is from CA.
Im waiting for the other shoe to drop. Waiting for the email from someone who wants me to wire transfer it and keep the balance.
I think the smart thing to do would be deposit it and wait a couple weeks.

Did you pay all of your taxes on that $2,000?

I figured it out. I googled the company.
Turns out it was some financial aid program I applied for several years ago when i was homeless and dealing with mental illness...and it took forever to come through.
It's ridiculous that it took that long to come through.

Wait, so you got $2800 for being homeless and mentally ill?
I'm high-functioning and an overall achiever. I wonder how much they'll give me.

In all honesty I could still use the money. I only have 200 in the bank.
...and it gets weirder yet...the house(6 bedrooms, swimming pool, the works) it was mailed from is valued at well over one million dollars on several websites...but it is recorded as being purchased for 150,000 only a few years ago.

Go deposit it now in a fresh account, but within a week cash it. That is what I would do.

Mysterious benefactor alert. This is turning into a Charles Dickens story.

the website of the financial aid place says that benefactors can decide exactly how and who the money goes to.
The name is unrecognizable to me and sounds like a psuedonym.
