Yield difference with casing
    #1440384 - 04/08/03 06:46 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

How much more of a yield do you get with casing versus just growing the cakes and whats the average yeild per cake using either method and i was told by a friend that lippy yais are realy good to grow are they a good first timer strain.

Variables, variables, variables. Average increase in yield would probably be around double for each cake cased.

IMHO cakes & bulk cased substrates do not compare:

Optimal cased bulk substrate such as dung/straw or compost will get you bulk B/E.

Biological Efficiency (B/E) is a term frequently used to describe yield potentials of mushrooms from various bulk cased substrates. Simply put, a yield of 1 lb. of fresh mushrooms from 1 lb. of dry substrate is considered to be 100% Biological Efficiency. Since mushrooms are approximately 90% water and the base substrate is typically raised to 70 - 75% moisture, 100% Biological Efficiency is equivalent to saying that 25% of the wet mass of the substrate is converted into fresh mushrooms.

agreed, I think I'll tell Mr. Monkey so he will start weighing his substrates to track yields.

Thanks!

BTW, under optimal conditions, with optimal spawn,  (deep) bulk substrates &  pH adjusted casing, 150 to 250% B/E is quite possible

So 6T, let me see if I got this straight, so growers have something to shoot for!

200% B/E would be 2 pounds of wet mushies grown from 4 pounds of wet poo, and is that for one flush or all flushes combined?  Also, for the experienced growers, what have you found gives the best B/E: all dung, dung/straw mix, or all straw. (and I don't want to hear variables!  I'm talking about grown in optimum conditions.)

...and I agree with Angry, casing will about double the yield if done right.

Perhaps tracking BE over a period of several months would be useful.

For example, yield of dry fruits from x amount of sub in a three month period.

As to the original question, case those cakes! Its just too difficult IMO to keep cakes hydrated.

You will find that 90% or more of the mushroom farms track BE of eace crop, this way they can maximize their yeilds and get more out of their production run.
