looking good buddy. You're diving in head first for sure. I did the exact same thing when I first started than ran outta room in my grow room & colonizing room, which is also why I have over 80 quart jars now.

Just make sure not to disturb your mini bulk experiment thingy until it's ready for the Fruiting Chamber. I'd say 7-10 days you can peak, but don't take off the foil or move it...

todlow, do I need to poke any AE holes in the foil?  It is not terribly tightly wrapped right now, just sort of folded over and tucked a little...and thanks for the advice not to peek...honestly, that will be the hardest part of this whole process...I'm marking my calendar...

80 jars colonizing at once??!! Holy Shamoley... Thanks again for for all the help you provide up here. This is a great site with some great peeps for sure.

Yes, you need some type of AE/GE during bulk colonization. Take a sharp knife or safety pin & poke a couple of holes in that bad boy. Just make sure not to hit the substrate.

yea, the 80 jars turned into a bit of a pita...spawning to bulk 3 tubs @ a time, G2G'ing 3 jars to 30 at a time...It was fun though.

:awethumb:

You're just going to put that little "tub" in your SGFC? or make a dub tub outta it?

Dub tub?   I'm not sure I know what that is...but I'm thinking maybe it's kinda like a G2G but using bulk substrate? And yeah, I'm kinda anxious to see some pretty little caps growing so I thought I'd put the two micro bulks I put together this morning into a 56 qt sterilite FC w/perlite for moisture...  I NEED to have some edibles for a planned fireworks display on the 4th, and time is running short... :facepalm3:

Dub tub is just a type of fruiting chamber. Kinda like a modified mini mono w/ a tub on top w/ the holes for FAE cut in it rather than the tub containing the substrate.

Ah, thanks for the explanation.  My quarts of rye G2G that I started four days ago are just about at 100%, maybe one more day for two of them...this is going MUCH faster than I expected...

the lil' 1/2 pt regular jars that I inoculated with the LC solution are also growing fast, but it's only been 48 hours for them...if they keep going at that rate, they'll be done in about ten days.  The bottles of LC are now full of mass, and the liquid is water clear, with the amber tinge to it...

This is the very same bottle that I showed in my first post, with the specs of solidified malt protein in it. You can easily see the mass that almost fills the bottle... pretty much time for the fridge, I think.

And, not exactly on the topic of my grow, but something I'm happy to have for later, I picked this up at a thrift store the other day. It was marked at ten bucks, but luckily, it was half price day...

Now to get some more of those stirrer thingy's...

I just realized that though I have a Sterilite container for a FC, I have drilled NO holes in it...thought I would lift top and fan a few times a day...so I better get the drill out and get going...do I really have to drill the bottom, too?  Doesn't that let the Perlite basically fall out the bottom??

Okay, just looked up dub tub.  Very interesting...I'll do that next time...for now I'm going w/the 56qt sterilite w/perlite bottom, etc.

That is quick. I just had some jars colonize in a week, but that was 1 to 5 G2G vs. my standard 1 to 10 G2G...jars look good though, nice. You got lucky w/ your MS & Found an extremely strong strain. I'd G2G that shit outta that jar.

Normal times for my LC 1/2 pints. I use those for GLCs for master LCs

www.mushroomvideos.com...RR explains the whole PF tek in it...just follow the SGFC tek to the T & you'll be golden.

Get large perlite @ a local hydro shop (mine's large & is the size of a sunflower seed, if not larger), that won't fall outta the 1/4" holes... Also, it allows for a better air flow from the bottom; resulting in less bottom pins & more side/top pins on your cakes. The perlite will dry out every 3-4 days, so misting & fanning is a must w/ SGFC, but for cakes & bang for your dollar, you can't get any better.

Is that Grain Liquid Culture? So I'd inject sterilized water into the jars after full colonization, then pull the liquid back into the syringe and store, correct?

Dang, the link doesn't work for me...that's okay, I'll research RR's tek vids up here, I'm sure I can find them. THANKS again for the tip.

Well, I live waaaay out in the boonies, and there are not hypo stores around me...the feed mill/garden centers sell the perlite, but they are small sized, mostly used as a planting soil amendment...but my big question now is: Does this mean I have to 'birth' my mini tubs to cakes placed on the perlite?  I actually thought I'd leave them in the Glad containers, remove the foil,  and the pins would only develop on top... now I'm confused....hah...nothing new there...:smirk:

UPDATE on my LC test grow - three days after inoculation with the G.T. LC from the bottle grow... it's looking good I think. Picture is taken from the very same angle of the same jar I showed in my last pic update, so as to clearly show growth progression.

I removed the hypodermic gas exchange apparatus from the bottle nipples, and now the LC bottles are now wrapped in plastic and put in the back of the fridge for later use.  I need the room in my incubator for more experimenting...

You're exactly right as to what a GLC is...

www.mushroomvideos.com

That one should work, for some reason it linked the "...RR" w/ it...

You can just put them in there in the containers. That should help a bit w/ side pins.

Your test LC jar is ready for a shake...looking good buddy.

Re: It's been two weeks today : UPDATE [Re: Panama]
    #14455776 - 05/15/11 11:35 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

It is now five days after innoculating the 1/2pt jars with the LC. Two days ago, per TODLOW's advice, I gave both jars a good shake. Here's the result - jars now appear to be at 100% colonization. I'll make a master GLC from this and put it away. Any ideas on how many 10cc syringes I should make from one of these 1/2pt jars?

In the mean time, I'm waiting for the first of my mini-tubs to fully colonize...I did peek  'cause I couldn't help myself - I pulled down a tiny bit of the corner of foil covering the bottom of the plastic container (NOT the top) and saw excellent white growth taking over the coir/verm. I'm giving that another five days and in the FC it goes....

I couldnt' get the large perlite for my SGFC, so I have to settle for expanded clay balls from the pet store. From what I've read up here, they make an acceptable substitute. On my FC, my only concern is lighting...I've read lots up here regarding the use of 6500K lighing to act as a secondary stimulation for fruiting, and to allow the fruit to grow upwards and towards the light...problem is, my top is solid on the FC, and due to space constraints, the FC will be sorta in a corner not very well lit.  I'm checking out some LED low wattage light panels now that put out 6500K light that would work perfectly attached to the inside of the lid of the FC. I could put that on a timer and have it on for say, 12hrs a day... soooo - is this going to be helpful? Anyone done this?  I haven't seen this exact model, but have seen some grows using blue LED's that seem to be doing well...

The four quarts of rye that were started from the first pint jars of millet/verm mix are all at 100% and ready to go into another bulk grow. I've discovered the method I'll be using for the next phase:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10713572#10713572

Thanks to Doc_T for putting this out there. It looks like a fantastic method, and very doable from my standpoint. I'll have enough spawn to do two of these pretty much right away, and I'll pick up the tubs tomorrow from the Dollar store or WM.  I have room on my ventilated shelving unit for the two more tubs, and a fan below them blowing up will be able to circulate the air around to accomplish all the FAE they should need.

...the fun never ends...

5/16 update... [Re: Panama]
    #14463314 - 05/16/11 05:23 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Getting ready to put together a mini mono tub ala' Doc_T's tek.  Went to Kmart today and picked up two tubs on sale for 4 bucks each...turns out they are about twice the square inches of the ones Doc was using, so I'm gonna do all four quarts in just one... this afternoon I made up my CCVG substrate, and put it into this contraption to pasteurize...

It's basically a large double boiler set-up, using a finely perforated top pot that holds 8 quarts of substrate. The bottom portion is the bottom of a pressure cooker, the lid is from a rice cooker  - it has a convenient steam hole in it that allows me to put a probe thermometer into the center of the substrate to monitor temperature. Brought it up to 180F, and then allowed it to cool in the pot.  To this I'll add my four quarts of colonized rye berries, for a total of 12 quarts of total mix substrate. Then in the black plastic bag it goes...

Re: 5/16 update... [Re: Panama]
    #14464235 - 05/16/11 07:48 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

My version of Doc_T's mini mono tub assembly is done.  The tub bottom measured 11.5 X 14.5 inches and the 8 quarts of CCVG along with 4 quarts rye made enough mixed substrate to give me a four inch depth in the bottom of the tub. I waited until the middle temp of the pasteurized sub was about 100 degrees, then poured it in the tub, spread it out. I figured it lost a lot of the temp there and it would be cool enough to work with...added the rye quarts and mixed by hand (after washing like a surgeon). Smoothed it out, put the lid on, and in the black bag it went. It's a huge leaf and garden bag, so I had enough plastic just to tie a knot in it. It now resides on a shelf next to my SGFC which is  ready and waiting for the smaller tubs that are still in the incubation chamber.
