Lophs and humidity
    #14404027 - 05/05/11 07:42 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Within the next week i'll be planting my first lophs from seed! I plan on making some mixture of cactus soil, sand and perlite. I wanted to get your thoughts on moisture level/humidity.

1. In the soil from the perlite. Doesn't perlite hold water and slowly release it? Seems like a cactus wouldn't like this.

2. I live in the northeast and my area has very humid, rainy summers. I also grow many orchids so I run a humidifier in the house through the winter and keep the humidity around 40-45%. Anybody grow lophs in high humidity? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Loph seedlings need high humidity for the first few months. Sounds like you have the right idea about the soil. I would suggest putting a very thin layer of pure sand on top, then putting your seeds on top of that. Remember the seeds need light to germinate. So do not cover them. Make some kind of humidity tent. There are a lot of teks for various types. I have had success using aluminum baking dishes with plastic snap on lids and also plastic cups with clear plastic wrap on top works. Good luck!
