The Snatch.....
    #14397369 - 05/03/11 10:38 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I feel that I have a great understanding of squats and deadlifts. My clean and jerk is pretty decent too. I maxed out at 170 pounds from the ground to holding it over my head. I think I could have went heavier but I was afraid to. Plus I was using steel weights and if I dropped them in the gym people would have been pissed.

I have been scared of the snatch. I have been too scared to try it but now I think I am ready to study it and begin the learning process.

Of course I am going to start by using a broom stick, eventually work up to an Olympic bar, and then start adding appropriate weight. the thing is I dont have rubber weights to practice with and its not very nice to throw down the YMCA's barbells onto the ground. I have to figure out something...

Does anybody have any experience with the snatch? Can you tell me about your triumphs and failures in your learning process?

The dangers overtake the the benefits imo.  Power clean to power press is where its at.

I dont exactly need to Snatch an insane amount of weight. I rather want to work up to snatching 135. Because it looks fun beneficial.

Well good luck then.  Its all preference, i personally like things that are slower and more controlled(power clean excluded)  Limits the risk of injury, which of course is counterproductive.  Cool vid btw, definitely takes strength but id say technique comes first.  The personal trainer at my gym told me of little asian dudes (like a 130lbs) he knew that would powerclean 225lbs and up, due to their excellent technique.

Really? That is good to know and gives me hope.

Tell me, what is a powerclean? Is that just another word for clean and jerk?

Well I tried some Snatches last night with a broom stick and then 35 pounds. It felt pretty good. I felt like I had good form but I know its not true.

Its going to be alot harder when I have to do my triple extension with heavy weights. The part when you viciously explode and pull yourself under the bar. It will certainly be an adventure.

Never tried one with a barbell, but they're superfun with KBs.  The handle makes the weighting much differently though, so my experiences wont' be much use to you - other than to say:  without perfect form you'll get hurt.  so practice practice practice.

when i first started snatching i got an epididymitis.  not fun.

Causes

A bacterial infection is the most common cause of epididymitis.[1] The bacteria in the urethra back-track through the urinary and reproductive structures to the epididymis. There can be associated urethritis (inflammation of the urethra). In rare circumstances, the infection reaches the epididymis via the bloodstream.
In sexually active men, Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for two-thirds of cases, followed by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and E. coli (or other bacteria that cause urinary tract infection). Particularly among men over age 35 in whom the cause is E. coli, epididymitis is commonly due to urinary tract obstruction.[2] Less common microbes include Ureaplasma, Mycobacterium, and cytomegalovirus, or Cryptococcus in patients with HIV infection. E. coli is more common in boys before puberty, the elderly and homosexual men.
Non-infectious causes are also possible. Reflux of sterile urine (urine without bacteria) through the ejaculatory ducts may cause inflammation with obstruction. In children, it may be a response following an infection with enterovirus, adenovirus or Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Epididymitis can also be caused by genito-urinary surgery, including prostatectomy and urinary catheterization. Congestive epididymitis is a long-term complication of vasectomy.[3][4] Chemical epididymitis may also result from drugs such as amiodarone.[5]

Dont ask me   I'm not a doctor

Doc basically said if there's sustained periods of intense pressure in the abdominal region it can spur infections, which is all epididymitis is -- an infection of the epididymus.

Dont ask me where it comes from -- cuz i couldn't tell ya that.  At the time I was living at my moms house and hadn't had any sexual contact in ages.

People are so misinformed about the dangers of olympic lifting.  For everyone's information, olympic lifters sustain less injuries/time trained than bodybuilders or power lifters.

Sorry to break it to you, but your slow controlled exercises don't happen in the real world.  Your body moves together in ballistic movements to maximize its power.

Snatching is very safe if you learn proper form.

People injure themselves doing bench press much more often than snatching.  And then when they try to use that strength outside of their 2-D plane their stabilizers are too weak for the main muscle groups and injury can result.

As for myself, My highest snatch was 121 lb at 155lb body weight.  Right now I am working on my form, I can snatch 110lb comfortably, but am trying to get proper form before I start going up again.

It is one of my favorite exercises.  And it is much easier to get away from the bar than people realize.  I have failed snatches many a time, it just falls in front of you as you step back.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

Chad bro fucking chill girl.  Slow and thorough is better than fast and jerky any day.  In the "real world" you dont have time to stretch yet i bet you stretch before you lift.  Tons of jacked ass mother fuckers out there and tons of different workout techniques.  Do what works for you, if you like the snatch than more power to you.  I don't.

Cannashroom,

Please tell me about your failures and triumphs in your efforts to perfect your form. I need to know details as I want to avoid as many mistakes as possible.

Mush4brains,

I think Cannashrooms point is that core movements are far more important than a heavy bench press. When a person has to push a car out of the snow or a ditch he has to use his pushing motion along with his legs or essentially his core. Somone who had been lifting core probably has a better chance to move the car than somone who has been isolating his pecks and avoiding core.

I try to relate my lifting to everyday experience. Mainly firefighting. Using the jaws of life with perfect form requires squating and deadlifting. Picking up heavy objects requires deadlifting. Tossing objects requires lunging motions. Racking hose on our open cab trucks is kind of like a bent over row. Core is definatly more important. Though I am not ruling out that a 400 pound house beam falls on somone and since he has a strong benchpress he will be able to push it off. lol....

Or course if you work both areas then cheers to you! Most people do work both areas anyway? lol.

IMO go find a coach.  I am thinking of taking a class at cross fit to improve my form.  Working solo is hard to improve well.

Right now I am just working on pulling the bar close to me (but not hitting the knees) so I can do a clean under-swoop.  I don't go below parallel much, not until I get better form.  I am also trying to catch it with my hips back more, knees keep coming out too much.

You act as though i go to the gym and only do benchpress or something dude.  All I said was that typically i like doing things slowly and efficiently, didn't say i don't work out my core.  I like to do certain things quicker than others like squats i do quickly and explosively.  For bench i like to lower the bar slowly to my chest than explode up, slowly lower down and explode up.  Plenty of lifts involve your core, in fact just about any lift you do standing up works your core.  I have a buddy who is a firefighter i used to workout with very often.  Sometimes we'd hit the gym, other times we'd do real world workouts: Flipping giant tires, pushing cars up hill, different kinds of heavy rope exercises, kettle ball, punching bag, hand pads.

I too lower slowly. I am currently using tempo's of 311 and 301. In my third strength phase I will change that to 201. In hypertrophy 3 there is 30X.

3 is my negative, the middle number is my pause, and the last number is my positive.

An X symbolizes intense explosion.

I think tempo is so very very important. When I work my legs out I step ups. Steps ups are fucking easy until you add tempo and include your 3 second negative. The same goes with a high pull and also pushups. Doing 30 pushups fast is easy. Doing 30 pushups at a tempo of 311 is alot harder.

Cannashroom,

In your past experience have you snatches butted off you shin or knee? I know that when I C&J or deadlift that I get black and blue spots or even blood spots on my upper shin right before my knee.

I also usually have a streak of hairless leg where the bar typically stays in contact with my leg. When I first started I used to bleed ALOT. I then took a step back and kept it tight, but I made sure I was not literally dragging the bar up my shin.

Well, I didn't even respond to you in my last post, I was just going to ignore you, but you wanted to keep arguing when I stopped, so ok man.  Furthermore, I never even mentioned core workouts, dunno why you're going off on that.

Yeah, and Im sure you do all your heavy rope exercises, kettlebells, punching bags, and hand pads all slow and controlled right?  Cause its better thank "jerky" "any day"?

Your punches, are they slow and controlled?  Or do you use your hips in a ballistic motion to fire your arm out of your body?

FFS man, you say that slow is controlled is better all this time (obviously false) and then claim to do ballistic exercises too, after bashing "jerky" movements.  Slow and controlled is good for some, obviously.  But if you want to have explosive power needed for things like fighting and sports, you need to train explosively.
