20,000 Americans a year overdose on acetaminophen

Painkillers need clearer warnings to prevent liver damage
May 4, 2011 - newscientist.com

Nearly 20,000 Americans a year are being hospitalised for liver damage after accidentally overdosing on acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol. Jennifer King, at Northwestern University in Chicago, says consumers are so comfortable and familiar with shop-bought painkillers that they are failing to recognise their potential toxicity.

Only 19 of 45 people interviewed in depth by King's team said that they actually read the ingredients on drug labels and only 14 (31 per cent) knew that the active ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen.

People can overdose on acetaminophen by surpassing the maximum daily dose of Tylenol, for instance, or by "double dipping" – taking more than one medication that contains the drug.

To help prevent accidental overdose, King's team recommends a makeover for packs of shop-bought medicines, including a universal icon for acetaminophen, a red stop sign indicating maximum dose and a clear warning about potential liver damage.

"You may have used [the same painkiller] for decades and don't feel you need to look at the label anymore," says co-author Michael Wolf, also at Northwestern University. "We need a fairly significant change to make people realise this is an issue."

It's as if they don't want us using safer more effective opiates. They'd rather us use a toxic drug with as dangerous a active-to-lethal dose margin as heroin. That's actually more toxic than heroin in active doses!!!!

If lots of people are dying thats fine, it's when something that seems harmless cause 1-5 deaths over a few years, thats when they call for a national ban.

Used in an intelligent way, acetaminophen is a safe, effective, non-addictive (or habit forming drug) useful to help with occasional aches and pains. I get the feeling most people who fuck up their liver by using way too much at once don't expect a not-psychoactive drug to be dangerous, or fail to heed the alcohol warnings. That's regulation'- regulation of every drug will mean lots of idiots go out and use it without being educated (by so much as the damn bottle, illiterates) as to it's dangers because they can  get it OTC...

I can attest to the dangers of acetaminophen as I overdosed earlier this year. I spent 5 days in the hospital because I was careless and failed to read directions. PLEASE READ DIRECTIONS 5 DAYS IN ICU SUCKS ASS!!!!!!!

I never buy that stuff.  If it doesn't hurt enough to warrant opiates then suck it up.
