Check out my pins please :D
    #14392611 - 05/03/11 01:33 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

This is my first time and just wanted to ask some questions I have at this point and for you experts to take a look at what's up.

Alright, what we have here is my setup.  The three cakes on the far left are B+ and were put in last monday.  The rest I just put in today and they are Golden Teachers.  (Minus the bottom right, it's B+ as well, but it was pinning a lot when I dunked so I didn't put verm on it.)

SGT obviously.  I fan every few hours really, anywhere between 6-8 times a day.  The first few days I sprayed a lot, but have cut it down a lot.  I usually only mist 3-4 times a day now.  (But I did mist the hell outta the new cakes I put in today which raised moisture content by a lot I do believe.)  hygrometer is at 100% most times.

Question for that cake^  Is that mushroom done already?  it looks like the veil is breaking if not already broken.  What's a good way to help them grow bigger?

And do these look okay? ^  They're B+ but the pins are more of a darker brown compared to the yellowish brown of the other cake.

Any hints tips help suggestions would be lovely.  I wanna make the most of my first flush.

Oh yes, I meant to add this:
The temp. is at a steady 70-80 degrees F.  Never over.  It maybe in the high 60s at night, but never crazy cold.  12 hours of 6500k light and 12 of dark at night of course.  4 inches of damp perlite.

Sounds like you got it down. Yes, that mushroom is almost done. It sounds like you're doing good with FAE, humidity, light, and misting. Sooo if they seem small it is most likely genetics. The darker pins look good.

Thanks for the quick reply.  :]

I'm glad to know everything is going so smoothly.

A couple more questions for you sir, or anyone that feels the need to reply.

The cake on the far left and center hasn't started pinning and it's been a week.  The other two started fine. As you can tell that bottom left one is bursting with life and the top left actually grew that whole shroom just today.  I'm sure the other is just stalled, but can never be too sure.

What would be considered a flush and how do I know the end of one? [ie. when to dunk again]

I've read things about maybe letting the humidity drop some once pinning starts to let the fruits grow better.  Is this true and if so, what about the fresh cakes that haven't started pinning yet, they need 100% humidity, correct?  Any clarity would be much appreciated.

Some cakes will just naturally take longer, especially with MS.

You will be able to tell when the flush is up. With MS, it can kinda do a flush 1.5 dealy where you will still get a few pins popping as the first few are maturing. Just give them a little time to finish than dunk.

Nice high humidity is good in colonization. The same humidity will work for your fruits, but high 80's to 90% is the sweet spot for the fruits themselves.

Thanks again for the great information, I wish I could rate you, but alas, not enough posts.

Are you saying the cake should be completely clean of fully matured fruits, aborts and pins?

yes, when you harvest, clear the entire cake and dunk.

FYI as when you birth, dunk and roll, even with pins it is ok to roll lightly in verm. The dry verm will grab the cake, and after you mist, it will help aid the cake in staying hydrated and will result in  a much stronger flush!

Thanks I think things are going really smoothly and should be ready soon.  All the pins on that top left cake turned out to be really tiny.  I got about 7 super tiny ones from it.  The bottom left looks great though, some larger fruits.

Should I make a print from the tiny fruits or wait until I get a bigger one?

I like making prints off larger fruit, however if you don't have a lot of fruit growing, then print what you can so you can keep the process going.

your mushrooms look really small, no offense. i think it may be because u fan every few hrs. try just doing 3 heavy mists followed by a good fanning. If you open the lid alot you are gona lose humidity.

So you're saying to fan less?  I thought a lot of FAE was good?

alot of FAE is good, however if you're fanning too much and not compensating by misting more, you're cakes will by on the dry side and not produce as many or as large of fruits. Its all about finding the perfect balance for the fungi

Give them a heavy misting (not too heavy though).

And then fan them. Do they look/feel real dry?

I think you may have a lake of FAE.

fae is good but so is humidity. when you take the lid off alot my theory is that the humidity will be the same as your room and will take awhile for the perilite to raise it back up with the lid on.

Thanks for all the responses and the support.

I'm glad things are going well for my first grow, however I am disappointed with the size of the fruits and the over all yield.  The fruits look beautiful fresh, but when I dry them they're soooooooo small.  I expected shrinking as 90% of their weight is water, but like sporesmores420 said "They look really small."  How do I get huge fruits?

I've been keeping my fruiting chamber at 90-100% at all times, none of the cakes feel or look dry.  They actually seem moist and have a good deal of water weight.  I'm about to finish the flush on the top left cake.  I'm going to feel its weight in comparison with the others before I dunk it.

Is it possible to keep my same setup, brf cakes and all, and some how maximize the yield/fruit size?  Maybe casing the cakes?  If that's possible, what would be a good casing tek for them?

Thanks again to everyone that responded.  I'm making prints now and I'm going to make more jars tonight, I'll check back tomorrow for any information you guys have to offer.  I'll also keep you posted with some pics if anything improves.

I don't think it's genetic. You tend to get small fruits anytime the parameters get fucked up.

Seems like you did it kinda backward? Misted heavily right after birthing and then letting off once the flush has initiated?

Try hydrating the cakes before the flush by dunking, then going light on the misting and increase as the flush takes off.

Some people swear that the reason noobs get small shrooms is because they don't water enough. Maybe that's true. I dunno.

I do know that if you screw up the fruiting in just about any way you get small shrooms. For example I was a few days into a flush when some polyfill fell out of a hole causing the rh to plummet for a good 18 hours. I got a crop of tiny fruits. But then I've also had a casing that I over-saturated with water and the flush got stunted.

I print all of my caps that are print worthy regardless of size. (Ive put 5 small caps to a print to make a "large print").  Your pins look alright just skinny.  It could be the MS genetics by a chance... also because of the genetics those darker colored caps could be the same reason why.. I had that with my Texan's I've been growing all my caps were light except for this one cake! their caps were so dark.  they also happened to be my heaviest weighing shrooms.. oddly.

just keep growing!  its all trial and error... you will soon learn that. what works for you may not work for someone else. we all have different climate variables because we all don't live in the same place nor do we all have the same equipment. always take peoples opinions into consideration and/or give it a shot but keep you in mind!

PS> I got B+ in my last week of consolidation... going to case em and see what happens...

Thanks for the response.  I'm going to try what you suggested on my next flush.

What is a good system to go by?  I know my SGT is fine.  It keeps humidity and has a TON of holes on all sides and is elevated.  I followed all the directions very well.

I was under the impression from "Let's Grow Mushrooms" that I should dunk and roll (which I did btw in case you missed that ^) - Then wait for an hour or so for the verm to stick, then spray the shit out of them for the next 24 hours.  Then to start pinning, to basically let the cakes lose moisture and to let the fruiting chamber get in the 80-90% range when fruiting begins.

I am most definitely a noob though and I may have misunderstood what I have read.

Since I got the small fruits though, I've just been trying to keep it at 100% and keep the FAE going.

I do plan to keep growing though, but I'm thinking of crumbling up the cakes and casing them for better fruits\yields.  Just gotta find the right tek/casing mixture.

I personally wouldn't mess with crumbling cakes... At least not until you get the misting/fanning down right.

As far as misting and fanning, you're pretty much right on. after you dunk for 24 hours, roll cakes in dry verm. let sit for 30-60 mins and then mist well to get the verm hydrated. FAN A LOT! The cakes drying a little after the initial dunk is how you help induce pinning. But you always want to keep the RH up in your sgfc. I personally just keep misting and fanning the whole time through...

If the cakes look too wet, I sometimes leave the cover off the FC to allow more air in to evaporate the water off the cakes.

or if the cakes look too dry, I give them a good misting and fan lightly after, replacing the FC lid. I then come back 60-120 mins later for another fanning to take care of the rest of any standing water.

You'll get the hang of it man, just do more jars and keep experimenting what works for you
