My 5g Bucket Dehydrator Tek
    #14388454 - 05/02/11 12:53 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

For the past week or so Ive been collecting things around my house and in Wally mart and $ store to make my own dehydrator...

Supplies
5g Bucket w/ lid (From Walmart) (2.96 for bucket + 0.96 for lid)
Small 4" "Personal-Size" Fan[A computer fan would work probably) (From Walmart) (6.00)
Light Bulb Socket from 5 1/2" clamp lamp (from Home Depot) (5.99)
1/4" Chicken wire fence (from Home Depot) ($10.00)
40w Light Bulbs (From Dollar Tree)($1.00)

And you'll need a drill or a knife and alcohol lamp or flame to make holes.  Also scissors, wire snipers or wire cutters.

Cost if having to buy everything: $26.91 + taxes
(most likely you will have some of these things lying around)

I had the fan (I use it to "fan" my FC's), and the Chicken wire fencing.  So this was relatively cheap for me.

1. I took the small screws off the fan so I could trace a hole for the fan. (in the lid) (then put the screws back on the fan)

2. I heated up an old knife and cut a little on the inside of my tracing line so I can sit the fan in when I need it and remove it for other uses when I need it.

3. I traced a hole to cut out for the light bulb in the lid. I then inserted the socket til the on/off switch and screwed in the light bulb.

Then I put the lid aside

4. I then lined the wire up around the top of the bucket and cut around close to the rim til I got a circle

5. I slowly pushed the wire circle down bending it to snuggly snap the bucket, I proceeded to make 3 more of these screens (4 total)

6. I next drilled 16 1/8" holes on the bottom part (4 holes evenly spaced in a vertical row, in four equal locations.

Voila. Done... Now test

I did the same thing but with an old cpu case off of a computer.  Took a light bulb put it in then took the CPU fan and hooked that up.  Worked awesome

increase the size of your bucket to a tab, then you can put racks into it. I did this with a large tub, it has 3 racks, and at the bottom i have two rather strong fans, i haven an infrared lamp for heat dont keep it on always thou gets way to hot, drys out shrooms super faster (this is alot cheaper than buying a dehydrator in my country)

Great idea, but, unless I'm missing something, it's going to be a PITA to pull those four screens up, fill them with whatever, and then push them back down every time you want to dehydrate something.  Since the screens don't really have to fit against the sides of the bucket, you might consider doing something like trimming down the circles until they're a little smaller than the bucket, taking 3 or four dowel rods, cutting them down to less than the height of the bucket, and then attaching your drying racks to them with wiretires or something to make a small shelving unit.

Then, when you wanted to dry something, you can simply pull out the shelving unit, load it up, drop it in, and pull it back up a day or two later.

Everything I say is just general thoughts and should not be taken as advice, recommendations, or suggestions.  If I write "you," it's as an indefinite personal pronoun because I find the use of "one" too formal and tiresome.

Trust me I thought about it. I collect the fruits layer by layer, since buckets are concave somewhat I'd have to remember what screen went where and adjust them per one... after I'm done collecting my dehydrated goods I just grab the wire rack with some needle nose pliers and go to the next screen... Plus I didnt want to deal with the hassle of putting dowels or screws in and out per shelf, when I would spend about the same amount of time or a little less just pulling the wire shelf up or squishing it down inthen adding the fruits.

1 Question you said drilled holes on the "bottom part" did you mean just all around the bottom of the bucket?

you could try a heat lamp in there
that would be nice
fill the thing up with juicy little bits
and dry a 5 gal brick of chunkerts

wet to cracker dry was about 24 hours.  worked well i believe.  the 40w doesnt get it very hot and my potency didnt degrade by a lot if any.  which is why i chose that low wattage in the first place (being concerned about heat)

I use a dehydrator that gets to 150 degrees F. Heat doesn't fuck with potency, let me promise you that! :bigjoint:

i know theres a cut off point for the heat or i'm sure we'd all be using our ovens... i'm just a worry wart... :frown: i didnt measure the heat inside the dehydrator by any chance but when i stuck my hand in every couple hours to check to moisture content it felt like a nice warm summer day  ahhh summer...

Why would you go through all that trouble when you could just use a food dehydrator? To save money?

would it work even better if you placed the bulb beneath the mushrooms so that the heated air would rise through the layer of fruits?
