Is verm neccessary?
    #14399914 - 05/04/11 01:01 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I just talked to my verm supplier and he said that the price has gone up 50% in 3 months from $22 to $33! I have a lot left from my 4 cu ft bag but don't want to run out and be left in the lurch. I am looking for medium/fine but all that he has is course. I am still looking.

Any suggestions?

grind up the coarse verm? I'd make sure to keep that as an ingredient to my cakes/bulk...

I don't think that the course will hurt a bulk additive as I've used it with success before but I've read that med/fine is a little bit better.

i pay that for a 4 cubic ft bag. $33.
$22 was an awesome deal ime. i've heard up to $50.
but some people grow on coir alone. verm adds wter reserves
and airiness for the myc.
i'd happily fork over the $33 though, i'm just getting to the
end of my bag and i've had it for 8-9 months.

I am shopping around and found out that 5 hydro stores that I called didn't even know what verm is! I couldn't believe it.

dude extra 10 bucks is not so bad, for what you get in the end it's still a very inexpensive hobby.

I agree but a 50% price increase in 3 months makes me wonder if I shouldn't get two bags to avoid future disappointments. One of the hydro guys said that he doesn't carry it because it causes cancer! WTF?

There are a lot of places in the midwest that stopped carrying it because they say there could be cancer causing agents in the vermiculite... I say wtf ever, my mushies like it!

Any major gardening store will have it and if you live in the United States, Lowe's has it for $5... it's enough for at least 50 cakes sub/roll and a lot for bulk. Or you can order online elsewhere. $35 is a rip off.

And a quick google will reveal that they say some vermiculite containing products also have asbestos because the mine they distributed it to worldwide in 1990 had asbestos mixed into it.

the $35 is for a 20-40 lb bag I believe... at least thats what it it is where I am. that bag is about 20 times bigger than the bags I was getting and going through in a couple of days... If the $35 is for the large bag that is 4 like 4 ft tall, then your golden!

I'm talking 4 cu ft here dude,a crotch high bag that's about 18" in dia. Those small bags ARE a ripoff. I don't/won't do cakes.

Those bags you linked to are tiny. I understand that you are trying to be helpful here but you have to compare quantity vs. price/volume.

It's too bad that shipping is more than the product! $50 from Ben Meadows total price shipped.

yeah, my source used to be less than a mile away, not it's about 10 miles away... still not too bad for 3-7 months worth of verm...
