Rye is out of season for my supplier (although he got me some). If you look in late fall/early winter it will be easy to get and probably cheaper. Bird seed is available year round.

Just about any untreated whole grain will work. Rye berries, hard winter wheat, millet, milo, quinoa, spelt, etc, etc. Bird seed is probably the cheapest and most accessible though, and millet/milo is usually the main ingredient.
Check the bulk bins in most health food stores. (i.e. Whole Foods, Earthfare, Fresh Market, etc). Assuming you're in the US, that is.

Use WBS. That's what I would do if you had planned the time and couldn't find rye. I have both WBS and rye grass going now. Rye is preferred but I had to get it from Amazon. A local health food store might have it.
The tricky part with WBS is drying it. It takes longer. Plus - I'm still finding it around the kitchen floor. One poster used a pillow case and hung the pillow case with the wet WBS in it until it reached the right moisture content.

As I understand it,rye grain holds a consistent amount of (lots of) moisture and is therefore an excellent spawn candidate. It also contains the correct nutrients that myc thrive on.

WBS makes a giant mess and clogs up your sink when you cant find the right kind of strainer.
Rye is nice and clean.
