Hello everyone my 1st post. I have been moochin info from everyone to the point that i just inoculated my jars. I felt compelled to give some info back. Im trying to grow shrooms very discreetly and dont have alot of hiding areas to do this & i didnt want to buy a aquarium heater. Trying to get the jars at the right temp to store for colonization I found was a daunting deed I came across a site that uses a string of christmas lights as a heater for germination. all u do is place the lights in a pan or tray ( i used a stock pot) and cover with sand or kitty litter. Then i took the smaller stock pot & placed it on that, with my jars inside with a towel on top. a 25 string light with inside temps of my house at 68 got the jars to 80 degrees exactly & the lights are berried so no light is emitted. If it gets to hot i guess u could remove single bulbs, too cold add another string. The 6 jars are sitting in my utility room plugged into the sump pump outlet, no ones looking there! I googled the safety of this method & apparently 1 guy has used this method for 25 years.

Anywhere from 65-75f is fine

68F is okay. The light will be your problem. They need light to grow mature.

68*F is fine. They may colonize a little slowly compared to 72-75*F but you have a lower chance of contamination.

ahh thats how it works. well I hope someone will benefit from the Xmas lights trick I just removed the towel covering the jars & the temps went to 78. Its pitch dark in that room so I think ill keep it there.

You can go higher, but the higher you go, the higher your chance of bacterial contamination.
I would not go higher than 80*F. Mycelium consumes calories while colonizing new substrate, which generates heat. This causes the temperature of the mycelium to be above the ambient air temperature.
I find that I have the best results right around 75-77*F, personally. That just my experience.

No, you need some light. Your jars are hotter inside because they make a bit of heat metabolizing the substrate. Keep that in mind when worrying about the temps. Incubators and darkness are old news. Great for growing bacteria and contaminants though. Room temp is fine. It gives the mycelium enough heat to get started but keeps contamination to a minimum.

ok my bad, it got cold as shit last night, for this time of year, the high 40S. After a little tweaking by simply setting a rack on the stock pot containing the xmas lights & sand mix, then elevating my jars above. I pulled a few lights above sand mix for ambient light, thanx to lugar & justnew, ( I cant believe i had forgot about that) any way the temps are holding at 76. This should work for people growing in cold areas, it provides a little heat about 10 degrees, & light. Thanks to all, I may had fried shrooms.

For when your jars are done and you go to fruiting check this out, everything bought at home depot for around $10, except tote.

for fruiting conditions that should be around 74-78 im sure some tweaking would be needed or does the He light bulb give the right amount of heat? Btw sweet set up!

I dont know, I only have one hydrometer and thermometer and it is in the SGFC. I just plug them into a 12/12 timer and finely mist them when they look dry , then I take the light jar out of the hole and use this to slowly pull air in all the loosest holes for 5-10 minutes. That is pretty much it, I have no desire to make it perfect if it works with little to no effort

74-78 are exceptional fruiting temps.
but it could be more right >.>

If you use the pint wide mouth jars you will need the 13-15 watt 6500k CFL, anything bigger won't fit in the pint. And my 26W CFL gets wayyy too hot, so hot it almost melts the plastic touching the jar after 12 straight hours. I recommend the smaller watt bulb if you are going to get it that close to your substrate. The 13-15 watt bulbs don't put off that much heat at all and if it does warm up the FC then it is just a degree or two, you can touch the jar lid and it is just warm after 12 hours.

yea that sounds really good . The ambient temp inside my house is kept about 68 in the basement, even when the ac is off. So the small 13-15 watt cfl should work perfect. Not to mention i cant draw attention to it. Its actually worked out pretty sweet. Its so dark in my basement that u have to have a light on, the light switch is at the top of the stairs,so there's no reason for someone to actually shut off the light and run into the basement.Hmmm what can i grow next?

If you get a solid color tub you will still have to cover it in duct tape or paint it if you don't want the light to shine through.
Blue tote= dim blue night light Red tote = red night light etc.

I just said that because you said you wanted it stealth, and I know light will shine through a solid tote, making it easier to see.
