Sunset Mission (not me, the Bohren album!)

Please allow me to explain to you why sunset_mission is sunset_mission.
Quote:
Bohren & der Club of Gore is a German ambient/noir-jazz band founded in 1992 in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany by Thorsten Benning, Morten Gass, Robin Rodenberg and Reiner Henseleit. Originally, group members started out playing in various hardcore/metal bands such as 7 Inch Boots and Chronical Diarrhea. In 1992 they produced a crossover of jazz and ambient, which they self described as an "unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds". Henseleit left the band in 1996 and was replaced by Christoph Clöser in 1997, replacing the guitar with a saxophone at the same time.
They are the quintessential, penultimate "wander the city at 3AM in the dead silent of night, orange citylights veiling everything, slight breeze blowing, just chainsmoking cigarettes and contemplating/reflecting on life" music. Their aesthetics are very much like Doom Metal (i.e. very emotive, a HUGE emphasis on dark atmosphere, minimalism, slow-paced, etc.) except realized in a noir-jazz form.
Quote:
Sunset Mission is the third full length record from Bohren & der Club of Gore. The liner notes include a quote from Matt Wagner's Grendel comic book, which reads: "Alone in the comforting darkness the creature waits. As confusion reigns on this hellish stage, the deafening grind of machinery, the odious clot of chemical waste. Still, the trail of his ultimate prey leads through this steely maze to these, the addled offspring of the modern world."
Deftones frontman, Chino Moreno, has declared this album one of his top thirteen favourite albums.
Outbeating even the supreme calculated chaos of Deathspell Omega or any of the hundreds of extreme metal band in any subgenre I've listened to, Bohren are my absolute favorite music group, and Sunset Mission is my #1 favorite album of all time.
Midnight walkin'? Throw on Sunset Mission. Last cigarette of the night? Throw on Sunset Mission. Grey, bleak, rainy weather? Throw on Sunset Mission. Combination of all of the above? FUCKING THROW ON SUNSET MISSION!
Black City Skyline
Dead End Angels
Midnight Walker
Painless Steel
Nightwolf Pt. I
Nighttime Pt. II
Street Tattoo
On Demon Wings (MUSIC VIDEO)
If anybody here is into jazz, then here is another masterpiece to add to your collection. For those into atmosphere, these guys do it like no other. And for those not into jazz or atmosphere in their music then here is a good place to start.

This album is so Casablancedly Private Investigatively cash.
Plus I always like to refer to my midnight tripping (when I usually trip) as sunset missions.
Enjoy!

Some more doom/dark jazz.
Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation
Kammerflimmer Kolletktief
Edit: First tune is Erik Truffaz and Mounir Troudi, second is Truffaz and Murcof. Just came across this Erik Truffaz guy, pretty awesome shit. It's more fusion jazz, but it's got a bit of the downtempo element too.

I'm very much a musical sponge and I like to share all the good stuff I know. I know a good thousand or so artists of MANY genres, though my root is in extreme metal, I found that opening myself up to the ultimate fringe of extreme music has allowed me to appreciate anything else. I mean, for fucks sake, Deathspell Omega are my favorite metal band! It'd be silly if I didn't enjoy anything beneath it, and frankly I can't listen to frantic chaos 24/7.
@jewunit: I'm very much familiar with Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation and Kiliminjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, but they just don't seem to hit that sweet spot that Bohren & der Club of Gore do. They're the kings of this sort of stuff.
They also take ALOT of influence from Angelo Badalamenti (who made the soundtrack to Twin Peaks if anybody is familiar with that show/movie)
Angelo Badalamenti - New Shoes

Spot on description, and that's exactly what they do.

No problem brother! I remember trying to show them to you before but you said the sax kind of put you off. I was never a huge sax fan myself but they utilize it so expertly and with such emotion.

s'all good man. I very much want to find more bands similar to Bohren, have had no luck with that. I'll be giving your links a listen when I get home.
Here's some more Bohren stuff off their follow-up album to Sunset Mission called Black Earth. That album is MUCH darker, more doomy, very bleak abyssmal stuff, but still with their sexy trademark noir-jazz.
Constant Fear
Destroying Angels
Maximum Black
Let's make this bleak rainy day an awesome sounding one, amirite peeps?

Hence, why my name is Sunset Mission.
There is not a soul alive who I've shown Bohren & der Club of Gore to who hasn't dug it, regardless of what genre they're predominately into.
I was never a fan of "traditional jazz" (I'm alright with David Brubeck to a small extent...) but this is the kind of stuff I can get down with. This album has kept me company when I've been stuck in bullshit situations many times before, i.e. a 4 hour walk back home in a fucking blizzard when all the buslines got cancelled.

Hell the fuck yes. I love how it's played over that sample of rain and thunder, that song + DMT/weed resin hit and a cig is how my day started off.
The way that song is structured is really fucking cool, with the little interplay of the bass/guitar/drums/sax.
Haha, I remembered you were one of the first people (and I think only person) to give me a +5 rating on account of Bohren. Are you at all into their non-sax stuff? (Geisterfaust, Gore Motel)?

oh i need to listen to it while tripping some day. i thought i was alone in the bohren club here until you showed up
not really into other bands like them, its just that SM album is like a film noire soundtrack and if you get immersed in it you start thinking about a movie, in black & white etc
