One third of the involuntary commitments in Northumberland County last month involved people who were high on bath salts, a county official said Tuesday.
Glenda Bonetti, director of the county Drug and Alcohol Office, said there’s been a dramatic spike in the abuse of the “extremely addictive drug” that causes hallucinations and psychosis, and it needs to be addressed.
Seven or eight of the 22 involuntary commitments to a mental health facility in April involved bath salts, she said, and on-call county workers this past weekend received three separate calls about someone being high on the drug.
Not to mention the rise in crime and fatalities, District Attorney Anthony Rosini said.
He joined Bonetti and President Judge Robert B. Sacavage in appealing to the Board of Commissioners Tuesday to take a stand and urge the state Senate to support a House of Representatives bill banning chemicals in bath salts.
Rosini was critical of the Senate’s decision not to back the ban.
“They’re being blatantly political. They’re delaying the process,” he said, adding that Sen. John Gordner, R-27, of Berwick, supports the House bill.
Commissioners Frank Sawicki and Merle Phillips agreed to send a letter to the Senate urging their support of the ban.
“I think it will have an affect in moving a bill,” Phillips said.
Rosini and Sacavage described the problems posed by bath salts as a “crisis.”
Sacavage said he was “astounded” by the rise in the use of bath salts and the dangers it poses.
“It’s a very, very dangerous substance” requiring legislative action, he said.
In early March, a Scranton priest was stabbed in his sleep by a 25-year-old man who admitted he was using bath salts.
Many municipalities across the commonwealth have banned bath salts. The substance has been outlawed in Florida and Louisiana.

it's crazy they have such a hard time banning shit that is clearly dangerous but such an easy time continuing to prohibit cannabis. i just can't see any drug with side effects like this being popular for very long anyway, i mean who want to be terrified by demons and zombies on the come down of a buzz that was nasty to begin with.

They are designer drugs that are unregulated in U.S. and most countries because they are new and don't have laws against them. They are sold as "bath salts" to make most people who don't know what they are not think that they are drugs so that the people who make and sell them can keep selling them, although now due to stupid people being stupid on drugs they are going to get banned, its like when the 2c-x drugs came about they were not illegal at 1st. Some of them are just shitty for you and terrible and others are just not drugs inexperienced drug users should be using, plus due to not much information on there effects and dosage people take to much or don't expect what they get. The lesson is don't be an idiot when it comes to drugs and don't do things you have not researched beforehand and you wont end up in the hospital or jail and ruin it for the people who use responsibly My 2 cents

Statitcs don't prove anything, anyone can prove anything using "facts" and "statistics". 22 isn't that big of a sample...I'd like to see the rates in a big metropolitan area....how many are being committed for alchohal...
