Music & Emotion
    #14398597 - 05/04/11 07:09 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

driving my BF into work this morning. i was trying to hold it together and be strong for him. but a song came on by Fever Ray, and i couldnt help it. the tears just started pouring out. yesterday the neurologist called. he reviewed the MRI/EEG slides with the radiologist and the things with the white matter is pointing to an auto-immune disease. they mentioned MS, or RA. they want him to come back for a barrage of more tests, they mentioned a spinal-tap which really really freaked us out.. being bombarded by the harsh reality of life is really teaching me to see past the trivial shit in life. i didnt even notice it is raining today, whereas normally i would wake up and it would immediately get me down.

i dont really have a point to this post.. just thinking about how Music can force you to confront feelings and emotions that you are trying to avoid. it could be a song that you have listened to for years, and the meaning of the song can change or evolve overnight as you experience things throughout life. sometimes it can evoke tears of joy, other times tears of sorrow. i often welcome and embrace the emotion that it evokes, because sometimes its the only way to express feelings that need to be expressed. it is Not Art, if it doesnt Move You.

:hug:

Music is one of the most amazing things in the world. It has the power to bring out your innermost feelings, and lay it out in the open.
You also develop memories to certain music pieces, which are triggered when you listen to it.

Abstract:
Although the neural underpinnings of music cognition have been widely studied in the last 5 years, relatively little is known about the neuroscience underlying emotional reactions that music induces in listeners. Many people spend a significant amount of time listening to music, and its emotional power is assumed but not well understood. Here, we use functional and effective connectivity analyses to show for the first time that listening to music strongly modulates activity in a network of mesolimbic structures involved in reward processing including the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA), as well as the hypothalamus and insula, which are thought to be involved in regulating autonomic and physiological responses to rewarding and emotional stimuli. Responses in the NAc and the VTA were strongly correlated pointing to an association between dopamine release and NAc response to music. Responses in the NAc and the hypothalamus were also strongly correlated across subjects, suggesting a mechanism by which listening to pleasant music evokes physiological reactions. Effective connectivity confirmed these findings, and showed significant VTA-mediated interaction of the NAc with the hypothalamus, insula, and orbitofrontal cortex. The enhanced functional and effective connectivity between brain regions mediating reward, autonomic, and cognitive processing provides insight into understanding why listening to music is one of the most rewarding and pleasurable human experiences.

As for the MS I've heard that cannabinoids kinda slow it down but I'd definitely research that if I was to cure/slow-down MS progression with :getstoned:

Yeah its a really sick song.
Its about finding happiness in yourself and being true to yourself.
I remember first playing it at this club.
Always a hit.

i love how emotional music can be.

one time i was driving to a friends house with a little under a half an ounce of shrooms, and on the way over there a song came on my ipod which i had tripped balls to many times before.

i remembered all those previous times tripping out, and then realized that i was about to share the gift of that kind of experience with some close friends. i got all emotional and started crying tears of joy because i was so happy for what they were about to experience.

i know, im a pussy :sad::lol:
