Anyone ever been that high ?

I was expecting to be able to run straight to the top.
These people suggest using tools and such...

There's no way in hell I'd go that high unprepared. High-mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable and you don't want to be stuck high up on a mountain in bad weather. Make sure that you can erect a shelter and keep warm up there when things turn for the worse.

Okay maybe not Mt.Shasta...but I WILL get to the top of Black Butte with nothing but a few bottles of water and a pack of smokes.

If the weather's predictable, you could do it. FYI: me and my friend were surprised by a snowdrift, freezing temperatures and dense mist precisely one year ago at an altitude of only about 2,000ft. We were lucky and it passed quickly, otherwise we would've been pretty much stuck up there.

OK. So you planning to do this around the same time as the gathering?

Possibly... That's if I can prepare in time.
It'd be cool to do it with a group, but I doubt anyone would be up for that.
Are you attending ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goat_Fell Which is not really a mountain at all, but even at such a modest altitude, the place was alpine enough to throw some neat weather tricks at us.
