casings in terrarium, pinning, should I add perlite?
    #1438138 - 04/08/03 12:58 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

I have three casings in a terrarium, they all have ok pinsets but the casing looks a bit dry. I mist infrequently but I've read that you shouldn't mist too heavily over a pinning tray. I have been considering adding perlite to the bottom of the terrarium to up the humidity. Would this have any effect at this stage?

What are the ideal conditions for growth?

I have a B+ strain cased in straw now in a terrarium, but I'm not too sure if it's to warm in there or not, I put the tank in the furnace room, must be about 80oF in there.

the straw is fully colonized now just waiting for the pins.

You should drop the tempreature to initiate pinning.

Script's answer was a great one , but do not forget , when soaking the perilite use a 20:1 mix of peroxide:water to prevent contams from forming in the pan .
That is 20 parts water to 1 part peroxide (200 mls of water to 10 mls of peroxide).
Good Luck

Your humidity doesn't need to be that high once pins start forming in casings, you want to be striving for 85-90% humidity after you have a good pinset and the temp will only determine the speed of growth, if you want hearty plum b+ then cool them off slighly they only needabout 74 degrees to grow right, also B+ enjoys a high mycellial growth rate and it will be beneficial to subsequent flushes to keep the mycellial growth popping through to a minimum until your first flush is done with, keep the mycellium just barely poking through
