First Grow: Classic PF-TEK with shotgun FC - Costa Rica Strain

So it is my first post and grow ever. I need some expert support haha!! Basically I thought about growing shrooms for a few years now. About a month ago, I just typed PF TEK and followed the first set of instructions i could find.
It is not a complete grow log as I now have 5 half pint jars size cake floating in water overnight, and 4 more still in the process of finishing the colonizing phase. These 4 should be ready to go in a week. I messed up and the substrate in these 4 was too wet, hence they take longer to colonize.
Here is a picture of my incubating system. Basically a trash can inside a cat liter full of water with an aquarium thermometer at 80F:

Here they are tonight floating in water overnight:

My gf holding a cake:

The shotgun box, drilled 6 sides with 1/4 approx 2 inch apart. It is a sterilite from walmart:

I think it looks good so far, let me know what you think.
May 4th / night
dudes i had an awesome day, i freaking learned today that it was star wars day. I had no idea until my coworker was like May the Fourth be with you and then i laughed for hours. wondered how come i never heard of it before.
anyways. here's a pic of the perlite getting washed earlier:

here's my FC filled with the wet perlite and ready to nurture my cakes. Heck I should rename it the nursery. I baby these cakes haha i talked about them all day long to my gf. shes going nuts i love it

here's what i will use in combination with the fanning when the fruits are done. It is a dessicator and some drierite found off the ebay:

close up of the 1 pound of drierite:

7 inch nalgene dessicator:

ya man! 5 cakes ready to go.. i already misted the dunked and rolled cake once and fanned right after for about 10 sec. will be doing it till the pins come out:

May 12th 2011
So I've put the 4 remaining cakes into the FC yesterday.

I've also spotted my first pin after 8 days into the FC of the first 5 cakes..

close up:
It was much slower than i expected. Now that i spotted the first pin, i will ease on the misting. Also .. question: what is the white fuzzy thing that grows on my cake??

Forget the incubator. Let the jars colonize on a shelf somewhere. RR says any temp over 83 is actually slowing mycelium growth. Put a plate over the cakes that are soaking so they are submerged. It looks like the cakes could have used a few more days to consolidate. http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek

ok so dump the incubator? You think normal room temperature (68F) will fasten the colonizing process? There is currently a plate on the 5 submerged cakes :P I did give them exactly a week from full colo. So what does a fully colonized look like? I was so anxious to get them going hahaha

Shoot for 75f. I just let my jars chill on the shelf at 68f. You have to remember the inside of that cake is a few degrees warmer than the air. The bigger the sub the hotter the middle. Anything between 65-75 is ok. Watch the videos man. Everything else looks good.

question: should i tape the bottom sides of my fruiting chamber? I don't want any side pinning. They are most pretty when shooting straight up!!

No.
They grow straight up whether they're side pins or top pins.
Also if you already built the incubator if you can keep it 70-75 without going much higher you might as well use it. But its not necessary.
Also do you have perlite for your fruiting chamber? I would soak it most immediately. It takes awhile for the FC to get moist from the perlite.

yeah i dropped the temperature in my incubator to 24C or 75.2F instead of 80F add 1 or 2 f and we're pretty close to 80, thanks Carl. I do have perlite I was waiting for tonight to soak it, might as well do it now since you've so kindly suggested it. thanks. Will upload pictures in a few

Go to a cigar shop and get a cheap analog hygrometer. Make sure you calibrate it!

Cheap hygrometers are useless, as are most digital hygrometers. Over time, you'll learn to read humidity by how long it takes the cakes or other substrate to dry off after misting. RR

I hear what your saying: but I think for someone who is inexperienced such as myself, it helps when we don't yet have the confidence in our judgement on moisture content. And/or it at least makes me feel better about my actions.

They are somewhat small and it looks like the caps are opening so they aren't going to grow very much more. Are the cakes light in weight? Low moisture can cause small mushrooms... On the other hand it could also be because you have so many starting to grow on that cake.

you have plenty of other pins, those 3 or so aren't going to get very big. you'll have to pick 'em soon.
