That funky smell means your sub is contaminated. Thats a bad thing
The only smell you want coming from your jars is mushroom

I've done everything the same way the first time I inoculated them. This doesn't make any sense. What is the most likely cause of this?
1. I've used the same jars against, although I washed them in the dishwasher and boiled them for 90 minutes 2. My vermiculite bag had a broken lock, therefor it was opened in the closet. 3. My BRF was opened in my cabinet.

Your substrate material is going to be unclean untill you steralize it. This is normal. Do you ude a PC or do you steam? Do you use a glovebox? Are all fans and stuff off when you Nocc your jars. I mean the list goes on and on. The most important prt of the process IMO is the sterilization. Fuck that up and you got nothing.

The substrate just did not look right. The inside of the jars just looked way too wet. I have 20 jars so I didn't mind opening just one of them.

I steam for 90 minutes at a simmer. I use a glovebox. I really don't know how I could have messed this up.
I also cleaned my jars after using them with iso alcohol, but I washed them in the dishwasher after. I have no idea!
