It seems to me that many who post here [at the shroomery] are at a point in life that is for the most part as good as it gets. Youthful and physically able while having enough leisure time and funds to spend a lot of time on the internet. And that even with this being the case, no one is really all that content. What is up with that? Why the heck do the young spend most their time trying to find something better? Is youth not as good as it gets, or are we just incapable of accepting that life will never be the perfection we seek.

If this is as good as it's going to get
But seriously, I haven't felt content in like 5 years. I haven't been satisfied with where I am since then.
Maybe it's because I am constantly comparing myself to others.

Why so pessimistic? I look forward to a future of greater wisdom and self-knowledge.

its a tragic leisure, people used to have to walk miles and meet many faces to obtain a sense of community/exchange information, but now we are enslaved by our own sense of comfort sitting in front of the computer, thinking outside the box but staying inside of it.

It only appears pessimistic to you because you expect something that doesn't exist nor is supported by history to ever exist. I just expect people to keep expecting and history supports this as well as your current expectations. Call it pessimistic if you'd like, we will see which is closer to truth over the course of time.

I was talking about greater wisdom and self-knowledge on my own part. I happen to know for a fact that I am wiser and more aware of myself and more intelligent than I used to be. This has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life. Why should I expect this process not to continue, possibly until I die but at the very least until my 50's (assuming I live that long)?
Are you telling me no one in history grew in wisdom and intelligence past their 20's? Aren't we stepping over from pessimism into outright fatalism now?

I don't see the pessimism you keep referencing tho. I asked in the OP if youth was or was not as good as it gets. If your youth isn't as good as it gets, that is a viable response to the question I posed. Can you explain where you see pessimism on my end?

I suppose I just see pessimism in the idea that having physical youthfulness and lots of free-time equates to life "as good as it gets." There are many other rewarding aspects of life as well IME.

Sure there are. But the majority of the other rewards in life are best utilized and accomplished with the energy and time of youth. They don't disappear as we age, but they typically get harder and harder to achieve. This is not a blanket statement, just how it typically plays out. I see lots of sour grapes. And I don't find this sight pessimistic so much as honest. For the majority of us, this is as good as it gets.

most people seem introverted too here. at least those who posted in the "how introverted are you?"-thread. maybe drug forums just attract discontent, insecure, fucked up people

I'm not that introverted. I see what you mean, though.

Yeah, I had a professor who described it as kn owledge for knowledge's sake. I think that's the best approach for a researcher personally. Those who go into research trying to find only what they are looking for are no good for the job IMO.

btw, i dont think men are "at their best" when they are in their youth... i think as a man you grow a lot the older you get. when you're 25, you're literally still a kid, in terms of real manliness.

we don't have access to the facts about if it could be better, but we strive, and striving is part of goodness. that's the same if you are young or old. I often feel like I am just starting out. like a beginner. I have the perspective of age having done a million embarrassing things, but lots of creative enthusiasm

The best part of my life is either this very moment that I am in or it is some time in the future. The best part of my life is most definitely not in my past.
