Question concerning drying
    #14394915 - 05/03/11 03:13 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello, I've been lurking here for quite a while and the reason I decided to finally post something, is because I'm facing a little problem.

See, I recently ordered a growkit (yes, I know) and everything went fine and dandy with the first flush. Only problem now is, that I've underestimated the drying process. I thought that would just require me to stick the mushrooms in a dry place for a week or so, but I recently learned otherwise, and since this little operation is a covert one, I can't use any of the methodes described on this website.
I currently have the first flush in a paper bag in a drawer.

Would the mushrooms lose potency if I had them there for a week?
How much in a hurry am I to find a way to dry them?

you need air flow to dry them... can you put a fan to blow on them? buy some "damprid" and and make a drying chamber out of a tupperware bowl that you can make air tight.

Otherwise just get a dehydrator and run it in the corner of your room for a few hours while your studying for your next test :bigjoint: just dont get ur parents or roomates in trouble...

I'll probably end up using the oven(seems the fastest), but it could take a few days 'till the conditions are right.

Will this endanger my mushrooms?

yes, they start to rot right after harvest... keep in front of a fan as much as possible till then... face a fan at the oven while drying and keep the door partially open as well or you'll cook/burn them (lowest setting!)

They might start to lose negligible potency, but they certainly don't start rotting in a paper bag.

I've had fresh shrooms in a paper bag for a week, and all they did was dry out a little.  Still tripped balls.

They'll be fine, Basmackin.  Get some damp-rid in the mean time if you can though.

If you are doing a "Covert op" then why would you dry them in the oven.

Just go to a grocery store and get some damprid if you are looking for a easy and out of place way to dry them.

Sorry I cant figure out how to start a new thread just signed up but been coming here for info for awhile....i have a question about drying...this is my first time growing and I have B+ mushrooms...i dried in front of a fan on newspaper for 24 hours then put in a ziploc bag for about 5 hours I was told they were not dry enough so I put them back out to dry in front of the fan....now today they have got a  green color to them not blue...did they molds? Are they ok to eat? They looked just fine when I first picked them and blued a bit when drying the first time....

I have to "stealth dry" to but I do it the right way. If I had to oven dry them I wouldnt even bother growing lol, it'd be like hitting myself in the balls. Fan dry, I prefer this over dessicants, they contain chemicals.

This is true. Plus it only needs to be out when your drying/over night.

Like you I have a pention for discretion. I pick when they're ready (veils are about to break), then I simply leave them on a cookie sheet (hide it under the bed or somewhere else out of sight) for 2-3 days, then I put them in a desiccant chamber. What's a desiccant chamber you might ask?

1 - Go to the Dollar General
2 - Buy a cheap plastic tupperware like container.
3 - Buy a wire metal strainer slightly larger in diameter than the tupperware opening and cut out the strainer mesh part.
**Steps 2-3 shouldn't cost you more than $15**
4 - Fill the bottom 1/2 - 1 inch of your cheap plastic tupperware container with Damp Rid.
5 - Position the cut out strainer mesh about an inch above the the damp rid.
6 - Put your semi-fresh mushies on the strainer mesh and the lid securely on the tupperware container.

Wait 48 hours. You know they are ready ("cracker dry" is the term you'll hear) when if you try to fold the mushroom at it's thickest point and it just breaks. In other words doesn't bend at all, just breaks. Like a cracker.

If your capable of getting to the point where your getting fruit bodies from a FC stealthy like, than you should be more than capable of hiding a tupperware bowl with drying shrooms!

A0
PS. Yes I can't spell for shit, and I'm not going to use spell cheker. Deal with it haighters!
