    #14390767 - 05/02/11 07:41 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

i was doin some more reading on the subject of shaking..I shook my BRF jars right after inoculation..bad idea? or doesnt matter? I read posts with both opinions..any reasons for not shaking the jars as opposed to shaking?

I would say bad idea considering the top layer of verm is your filter, so while shaking it you loose your filter leading to possible conatam. But I still am in the learning process so don't take my word for it.

i guess it depends on if you used a filter or if you're depending on the verm to stop contams from getting in. if you used a filter i'd say you're fine, but if not i'd go with muffinTop on this one

haha..

but no seriously..i'm guessing your jars were "sterile" when you nocd them up, including the verm layer (to a certain extent anyway). I wouldn't THINK shaking them up that early would be "bad". I'm no expert, but it just seems like if you shook the jars up after sitting and collecting dust like 2 weeks AFTER you noccd them up.. well i guess the verm would be dirty or at least have some contamination, unlike when you first inoculated.

Possibly the worst thing you could do with BRF jars. Shaking is for grain jars, my friend, not BRF.

When you originally added substrate to the jars, you should have loaded it really lightly, and VERY GENTLY tamped it level around the edges before adding the dry verm. You do it that way to avoid compacting the substrate, which can lead to incomplete colonization. By shaking it, not only have you risked contamination by particles that fell in to the dry verm layer, but I imagine you compacted the ever-loving crap out of the BRF mixture in the jar.

I can't imagine anyone saying this would ever be a good idea. Sorry for your fail, better luck next time.

there filtered for sure, and were sterile before i knocked them up..i was just wondering if it was bad for the spores..i got my GE on the right track finally, now im going down the line of posibilities..its just takin a little longer than i expected to see growth so im goin over everything i can think of..

It is bad for the spores.  Only because each spore needs to find a compatible "mate".  When you shake it makes the spores harder to find each other......Never shake BRF cakes though that is very bad....Especially if the holes were open on the top or any space for air to creep in...

i just checked the jars this morning...the layer of dry verm on the top is still 100% intact, the holes at the top are covered with micro pore..and the sub in my jars is still loose with tons of crevaces and holes so its still lightly packed..just worried cause its taking so long to show signs of colonozation..no funny smells or growths tho..its been about 2 weeks now with no signs..

Lmao... The point is don't ever ever shake BRF jars... A little research would have yielded the same information.

May i add that there, well, shouldn't be room in a BRF jar to begin with to shake.

first timer here..and i did a "little" research thats why i had to ask this question..because most of the posts are people arguing about it..no straight forward answer..i didnt personally make the jars..i got them from a guy..they're one pint, with the layer of dry verm at the top..which is still there, and i have the holes covered..im not really worried about contams at this point..more worried about whether the jars were junk to begin with..or if i mest it up by shaking..

Smack it against your other palm.
If you've used grain-style lids instead of a dry verm layer, it makes sense.

unless you shook the dog-shit out of them, the pf sub didn't move, so it didn't distribute anything. Contrary to what peaple have been saying, a little side to side jiggle, right after inoculation, and before you open the g/b is a good thing...to fill the holes in your verm. layer left by the syringe. Leave it on a flat surface and just move it back and forth quickly with wrist motion. About 2 shakes will do it
