what kind of coffee??
    #14391948 - 05/02/11 10:51 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I am new to this and was wondering what type of coffee should I use in by substrate. I was going to spawn quart jars of spawn to coir/coffee/gypsum/lime mix. Will some regular folgers non brewed coffe grounds work or do they need to be brewed grounds?

Its better if its used coffee grounds but be aware that coffee grounds tend to contaminate more easily

You want spent grounds. Fresh grounds are high in nitrogen, and acid.
Any coffee shop will give them to you.

Ok thanks. Would you suggest using the coffee grounds in a coir substrate? My plan is to spawn my colonized 1 pint wbs jars to coir/coffee/gypsum and lime. Would this be good or too much?

Okay that sounds perfect. Then mix that with a 1:4 ratio spawn to substrate correct?

No serious, for your first attempts, dont use coffee.
And no need to use lime in coir bulks.

You are going to fail at growing mushrooms.

Okay so coir/verm and a dash of gypsum correct? And what about a casing layer? I seen an amazing grow on here with just a verm casing. Would you recommend that with the bulk substrate I'm gonna use?

I would rather not use coffee actually. It would be a pain in the ass driving around asking resturaunts for their spent coffee grounds. I'm just making sure I get it correct. So I'm not using coffee I understand that now.

Okay use the wax paper even when using the shotgun fc? And if so then I use the wax paper until the pins grow big enough to push the paper off the tray? And how often should I take the wax paper off and fan?

Use the bulk substrate and make a pseudo layer with it in order to cover the exposed grains.
As thin as possible but make sure to cover all grains and try to get the surface as even as possible.
Also a higher spawn ratio will increase the colonization speed and lower the chance of getting contams.
I use a spawn-ratio of 1:1.
