for a full 5 gallon bucket?
would it be possible to make a sort of super-cake out of it?

for a 4 inch substrate you could use either 1 to 2 jars ... depends on how fast you want it it done ... 1 will get it done but 2 would do it faster ...
and no you cant fill the bucket up entirely as it will surely contaminate with bacteria around the bottom ... not saying that maybe if you used 8 10 jars you couldnt do it but that would be a waste in my opinion and nothing close to a sure bet ...

thanks, so would i do better if i treated it like a monotub inside the bucket, or like a giant cake?
i'd like to have it colonized as fast as possible.

yeah use the remaining space in the bucket as a fruiting chamber ... buckets also need a lot more fanning than tubs , but if you can get one of the buckets with the lids you can make some fae ports with poly fill in that but its not going to be at substrate level which is the standard for slow delivery of fae ... an added fish pump bubbling through some water and then piped through the top and resting right at about sub level would really help ..

sweet. would i still need to fan even if i had the fish tank bubbler?
and is this just a waste of time? sounds to me like a monotub would just be eaiser

ive done mini tubs and some buckets before without having to fan using a 60 gallon fish bubbler ... but yeah mono tubs are great and proven effective ... if youre not working with much spawn though you may not have enough for one ...

Giant cake != giant fruits. You'll just waste a bunch of spawn and substrate. What you should shoot for is a medium-depth substrate with a large surface area. That way you get a greater area for pins. Anything over 4" deep (in my opinion) is wasteful.
BRF cakes do well because they are balanced and you have a large fruiting surface area compared to total area. Invert that concept by keeping the cake in the jar, and your surface area is cut down dramatically. That's what you'd be doing by making a giant bucket cake.
