So I've decided to swich to using lc for spawn to my mycobags. I've been a grain spawn guy years now so I'm not experienced with lcs.
I'm going simple w karo water but the lids are what I need help with. I'm using agars rubber plug and whattman filter lid an am wondering if anyone has used the Ball brand plastic lids for this type of setup. Thy say not for processig on the bottom but I have used them for grain spawn before so I know they can handle the pc just am not sure fthey will work with lc and am looking for someone w experience.

Grain kicks LC's ass.
Also, the plastic lids leak a bit. Search my Ultimate LC Lid tek for one way to use them.

I know grain is grat but lc is cheaper and in theory seems like I can get to finished product faster.

Why not do a Grain LC? Doc T has a strong dislike for sweet LC's because they can harbor contams and you won't know it until it's too late. With the GLC, you are taking myc from a clean (proven) jar so contams should be minimal. I'm a noob and I have done one honey LC with no problems but will do the GLC next.

I'll do fine with the karo lc and am quite confident in my sterile lab techniques. I'm not a complete noob to lcs. Promise . I was just curious about the lids. Thanks tho.

And doc_t, you should check out agars lc lid. No offense, but it is superior to urs IMO simply because of the .02 micron whattman filter. Not only is it superior filtration but it is also quote easy to silicone down into the lid.

That filter is not superior to polyfil. Don't confuse cost with effectiveness.

Really? How so?
I admit I do not know the micron rating of polyfil but .02 is smaller than my flowhood.
And honestly, I've never liked polyfil for anything because of it increasing the chance of human error with possible inconsistencies of density. However, I'm sure that becomes less likely with experience. And besides that, it seems that if the smallest drop of sugar-laden water finds it way onto that fuzzy little ball that you would have yourself nothing but a smorgasbord for competitor microbes.
Besides the lab-grade filtration, the whattman filter also only leaves a 1/8" hole for lc to work into and also leaves the internal and external environments isolated much better IMO.

I've tried the plastic lids for my LCs before...I fucking hated them. Ended up throwing out all 8...I now have only metal lids for my LCs...
See signature for tek
I agree w/ OP on the topic of Whatmans vs. poly. At least, I don't have to worry about my filter getting wet when I swirl my LCs...
