Is My Dehydrator Too Hot?
    #14389143 - 05/02/11 03:11 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Picked up a food dehydrator from the Goodwill for $5 last week. As I started drying my fruits out on the 5th tier, I noticed that the shrooms were completely dried up into almost nothing because I put the lid on the dehydrator and it was SUPER fuckin' hot in there.

So, I've been doing it for the past few days with the lid off (still keeping them on the highest tier). Problem is that they're still drying out too fast and the dehydrator is still putting off some serious heat.
There are no heat-adjustment switches on it, just an ON and OFF switch. This thing is drying full grown fruits in ~6-7 hours, with way too much heat. I've heard of disconnecting the heating element, but what do you guys think I should do? All suggestions are welcome.

First, use a thermometer to measure the heat.
I've used a timer in the past, like 2 hours on and an hour off.

Thanks Doc, I never thought about using a timer for some reason. Oh, there was a reason...
:getstoned:
As for a thermometer to measure the temps, the user guide it came with said that it reaches 135F (which I know that the less heat, the better.)
Even though I think psilocybin starts breaking down at 160-170F.

I'm glad you're always perched and waiting to answer people's questions Doc, especially with all the bad information some people pass around these forums. You shouldn't be all that far from that "Trusted Cultivator" tag.....
:thanx:, and I'll be sure to follow the Doc's advice.

If yours has a dome lid, like mine, you might try to put some jar bands between the bottom of the dome and the base to create air space between the base of the unit and the dome to help lower the temp. That's what I do anyway.

Why do you keep saying you won't ever be a TC,your imformation is always solid

I mean you can be a bit cranky at times but can't everybody at times I think the important thing is your level and quality of your advice which I find personally to be very knowledgable

I've called RR on bullshit too many times, he loathes me.
And he alone controls the tags, it's a mark of personal favor.
