As I said, I know the information is out there. I just figured a thread for motivation itself would bolster some very interesting conversations between the newbies questions and the wise sages' responses.
Open your mind to new possibilities.

How about using the search function at the top of the page to find the uses for each. This is a dull and lazy question. Why are can openers the best way to obtain Chef Boyardees' Ravioli?

Steelcutoats said: All across this site, the same materials keep popping up in several different teks. This pool of 'stuff' includes but is not limited to.
-BRF- Very nutritious substrate for cakes -WBS- Readily available grain used as spawn for bulk grows
-Popcorn- -Glass Jars- can be used for a million things (grains, cakes LC, GLC, agar, etc..), you can easily add inoculation and ge holes, and they are fairly PC resistant -Shotgun Terrarium- Best FC for cakes or trays, easily made, provides constant FAE and keeps humidity high -Tyvek- Just a type of filter, doesnt have much of an advantage over any other type of filter. whatever is most readily available. -Syringes-No better way to inoculate -Alchohol Flame- You dont necessarily need this, just a lighter to flame sterilize needles -Vermiculite-Provides moisture retention (and some nutes) for cakes, makes bulk mixes more airy and fluffier
-Geolite- -Perlite- Super large surface area because of all the pores, so lots of water can accumulate on the surface for evaporation and air can easily pass through to carry humidity into the FC -Hydrogen Peroxide- Small amounts wont harm mycellium, but will kill some molds like cobweb -Coir-Easy to obtain, pasteurize, and work with in bulk mixtures -Worm Castings- Nutritious supplement -Manure-Nutritious bulk mix base -Pressure Cooker-Only thing that will sterilize grains -Gypsum-Nutritional supplement -Oyster Shells-nutritional supplement
The definitions of these things, as they relate to cultivation are easy enough to find. But, the motive for using them over any other material is not as easily located.
I and other newbies could benifit greatly from the consolidation of the motives (what makes this particular thing crucial) for these things listed, and any other common tool to the mush teks. What makes a pressure cooker better than a pot with water? Why is brown rice flour better than any other type of flour? Why is gypsum and oyster shells used in casing layers? Etc
But in the end the what is the motivation for using these things?
...because they provide some of the best results. why else ?

Was there a Noobie Committee election and you won? I missed that.
Seriously. This is complicated stuff that requires a learning discipline and patience and some failure to learn. You just asked us to please "Start this 10 year conversation over again for me because I just showed up".
This has to be one of the best designed websites/forums I have come across in my 20 years of being on the internet (I started in the days of usenet). Listen for a while, learn to use the content and good luck. You will enjoy this place.
