I want to let them go as long as possible but i don't want to let them dry on the plant because i heard that the alkaloids can go back down to the roots. Is this true?
If anyone knows the answer to these questions it would be extremely helpful.
read my tutorial. its hard to say since i need pictures but basically you need to wait until the pod points down( it means the plant isn't producing anymore and is ready to harvest)
if your not scoring you can take the pods and the stems and bring it home to dry, afterwards you can blend it

nice1 said: The pod is ready for harvest as soon as the crown on the pod is up turned. As you are an indoor farmer you can harvest any time after that.
The reason pod farmers allow them to die and dry in the field is because its way easier to dry and harvest them that way. If you have a lot of outdoor pods you don't want to cut down and hang up to dry every single pod they actually dry better and I found they were less likely to rot when sun dried in the field.
IMO there is no potency loss. It doesn't go back to the roots. If there is a loss then it is minimal - I know this because I've grown and dried & consumed them & tried both methods.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I have checked out some of your threads and they are impressive and well done. The crown on the first one to bloom, turned up very quickly after petal drop. I believe that it's a p. White. Literally less than 7 days. I knew that it could not possibly be ready by then so that indicator wasn't going to work in this instance. I think I know what your saying. You mean when the pod starts to lean over and droop a little that it has completed it's growth and is finished, correct?

Cool. Thanks bud. I'm going to pm you when they are done if you don't mind. I have a question or too that I'm sure you can help me out with.
It's pretty crazy how fast they open once the flower casing falls off. A half hour to an hour and it's completely spread out.[url=http://files.shroomery.org/files/11-19/517159991-SDC10749.jpg] [ /url]

It is a very big grey area as has been said before. Even though they are tolerated in places like grocery stores and on bagels and poppy seed cake they still contain drugs that are scheduled and are therefore illegal to possess. I believe the usual line between what is tolerated and what is prosecuted is whether or not you are using them as a drug. If they find a bunch of seeds in a 2liter jug and a glass of poppy seed tea on your countertop they'll probably prosecute. If you're just in your garden planting seeds and enjoy the flowers they'll probably leave you alone, but that is not always the case.
The main point is that they have the ability to prosecute if they really wanted to because anytime you have seeds or pods of the papaver somniferum you have illegal substances in your possession. Whether you intend to ingest them or not is of no concern if they want to prosecute.

The sad looking poppy to the left of the Danish flag is the only plant out of 9 that just cant make that final push. If you look close at it you can see there's 2 flower buds well formed but not going anywhere. I wish i could say one way or the other why there's so much die-back on the leaves, or why it's so . It looks like nute burn but i know i didn't feed it that much. I dont think she's gonna flower but i hope i'm wrong.

lol, yeah all but that one. It's beat up from the feet up. You have experience growing poppies so tell me.. Is it normal to get the occasional plant that just wont produce?

not occasionally but there has been times when the poppy wouldn't spill her sips, but my issues (since i live in ireland) are mainly the blight. two years ago, it was very rainy and a number of my crop got infected with a cotton looking infection that grew on the stems, i quickly destroyed the infected and afew days later i destroyed a dozen more. blight spreads like mad especially in cold damp conditions.

I had that happen to a couple of my plants in the area where the new growth turned black and stopped growing. I just cut off the cotton looking fungus a few inches below where it was and it didn't progress any further.

Some of the H&C's are swelling up nicely. Especially the chick's. There taking on a nice purple tint as well. I think the Danish flag plant i have may be a dwarf variety that I've read about. It has 11 pods on it but they are very small. The flower buds, flowers, and stems were all much smaller than any of my other plants and the plant itself is only a foot and a half tall.
