Nice find.

Yes, the cup fungi and morels are both Ascomycetes, and they are closely enough related to make them have similar texture. Unfortunately, the true morels are the only ones which are really safe to eat. The others are difficult to identify accurately to species and many of them are poisonous or carcinogenic. Dr. Nancy Weber recommends that none of them except the true morels should be eaten (she knows more about them than anybody else).

You're not going to just wipe the cat shit off and eat them anyway?

Happy mushrooming!

Ahh the cat shit don't bother me it's the damn slugs I wont eat  Seriously I was just a few days late on this find as they were fairly shot through with maggots and slugs :frown: too bad as these are while not common, are found in much better condition and are excellent.I will be hitting up all the yr. old slash burn piles from the logging in the area and have a nice supply of dry for the yr. :grin:Where I am they are almost always found with the cup fungi. Usually I look for thick flushes of them, as they seem to fruit first,in the burned ground on logging sites. Then I just go back over them from time to time and have great luck finding morels. WR
PS we have many Ascomycetes to observe I should photo more of them. Some are quite bizzare

Morels are Ascomycetes? I always assumed they were Basidiomycetes just because they produce a club-like fruit instead of a cup-like one.

Whiterasta- I would definitely be interested in seeing some more pictures of Ascomycetes in the field. I haven't seen many at all, and I'm sure some of them are even more interesting in appearance than the Basidiomycetes that we are used to seeing.

Namaste.
