what works works but your introducing an additional and needless vector for contams. use a clean flame.

Okay so by your logic you are implying a alcohol swab packaged in an airtime package, lased with iso is harboring contaminations?

almost.
once you open up that "airtime" package, youve now exposed a product advertised as "sterile" to open air. it is no longer sterile. regardless of the alcohol.
the rapid drying of 70% iso alcohol kills most all bacterias.
but has absolutely no effect on most mold spores. i.e. trichoderma.

Go read my previous post again, i said if you opened it up within your still air environment. Yes obviously if you open up the package outside your glove box or away from your flow hood, then move it to your work environment you will catch bacteria along the way.

not probable maybe but entirely possible. you may NEVER see a contam doing what your doing. point is, it's possible you might and since it's simply unneccesary why bother? do you purchase those swabs? why not just spend the money on a decent flame, and avoid the risk altogether.

so then is the point of the alcohol swab purely to get the black soot off your needle?
it doesn't bother me much. id rather save money on alcohol pads

I used a lighter before getting a torch, but i normally use the swabs to wipe down the utensils.
And at like 2$ for 500 i cant exactly complain that they're expensive.

You guys think too much. PC your tools, then there's no need for flame. No fire hazard, no soot, no cost, no danger.

About every couple of months, somebody sets a glovebox on fire or has an explosion inside one.

Poor systems engineering, not negligence. Why introduce an opportunity for human error that you don't need? Flaming brings no benefit over other sterilization methods, other than being immediate. Think and plan, you can avoid the need for fire and avoid the need for vigilance around fire.

lmao i think its safe to say you should follow doc_t's advice. its not how i've been doing it, but since i read this i realized something about sterile technique. now i just gotta find something else to use my blowtorch on...
