Always always always let your PC cool to zero pressure naturally. At that point, it's ok to remove the hot jars. Better to leave them though.

Three one-liter jars? Or a number of 3-liter jars?
You might try different sizes and styles of jars, sometimes you get a better packing ratio with another size.

You can cool down your pressure cooker fast If you put a fan in front of it. This is what I always do. I have 21.5qt AA and it only takes about 5 minutes to cool down to ambient air pressure. And I have never had any contamination problems with this either.

It's optimal to let them cool all the way to room temp in the closed PC. Not necessary.

if you're worried about contaminants some guy here said something about ousting out like a grocery store sack and then putting the jars in that and tying it off to let them cool in there.
I'd be more worried about the jars breaking, but it sounds like ur going about it the right way. Cooling the jars rapidly to try to inoculate would probably be more risk of breaking them, as i read ur just trying to get the PC open. I've done this before when in a rush to get 2 cycles in in a day. Should be ok.
Hit up the thrift store, or craigslist. You can find people on craigslist with nice oldschool pressure cookers that are huge and thick as shit!
