A very nice Tek to dunk your Monotubs! 8

Recently while speaking with faceyneck about a good way to dunk a monotub, he suggested that i get a couple of lengths of pvc pipe to put through my polyfill holes to hold the sub in water. I expanded on the idea and put 2 T caps on the ends to lock them into place.
Here is a pic to more accurately describe what my high ass is talking about.

I let it dunk until no more water was being absorbed... This process took about 4.5 hours...
The great part about this is, its extremely easy to drain... Just tip your tub over upside down, and it rests on the pvc!

After draining for about 30 mins, your tub is ready to go again!
Though i heard this from faceyneck, he states he believes he saw it in damion5050's post somewhere...
So im not claiming this, i just think its something everyone should know!

Try some foam pipe insulation over the PVC,you just slip it over the PVC and it keeps the substrate fully submerged as the water level rises to the bottom of the holes in the tub. It is also softer than the PVC and is less of a "point load" on the sub. I cut the foam about 3" less than the length of the PVC from wall to wall on the inside of the tub and use 1" "plugs" of foam on the ends to plug the holes while submerging . The plugs are removed to allow water to escape out of the holes while draining the tub (you really only would need to do this on the drainage side).
I just lay the tub on its side for drainage as it would be risky to flip it all the way over (it is rather soft at that point and could easily fracture). The foam still protects the sub and the holes are clear to allow full drainage. I also have a plastic bag on the bottom of my sub so flipping it over to drain like I believe I see in your pics would not be an option.
I hope that made sense and helps.

Yeah I remember seeing Damion mention using dowel rods through the holes in his coir bucket tek. Since that thread is like 80 pages long now, I'm not even gonna search for it, but it's a good idea.
I just weigh the sub down with something and fill up the mono to the first set of holes....then dump it out carefully when it's done. May get around to doing this someday.

i duct tape all of the lower holes then put something heavy on the sub while i fill up the tub with water
i tried ur technique a while back but the tubs i used barely fit in the tub by themselves so i had no wiggle room to fit anything through the holes

Thanks for sharing this! Im assuming this can be done with just a casing layer mono? From what Ive seen everyone spawns to bulk in their mono's. Never seen ayone just do a casing layer in them.

a casing layer sets on top of your substrate and is only about a 1/4" thick... why would you only use a casing layer to make a monotub?

Stealth is a main factor. Said tub is small enough to hide, yet large enough to produce some nice sized fruits. My friend is doing his first casing tonight, he liked the monotub idea so instead of spawning to bulk he'd just be casing

a casing is a non nutritious layer of peatmoss and verm used to form a microclimate to help pins form at the surface of the substrate.
its not something you use as a substrate.
do you mean hes just doing a small tray, like he spawned to some substrate or he cased some brf cakes?
Im just trying to find out what you mean cus your using the terminology of "casing" incorrectly.

Im sorry I used casing rather loosely, my friend has BRF cakes, he wants to crumble them in a monotub and apply a casing layer on top, opposed to spawning the BRF to bulk sub like many people do. He is aware that Monotubs are used in bulk growing, but If he just crumbled and cased in a mono and left as is he doesnt see why it wouldnt work.

Because it would not retain moisture that well.
It would work, you would just have to mist and fan a lot.

Well you mist the substrate to replace lost moisture, I guess you would not really need to fan it, but with the lid off and you being right there, a few swings of the lid won't hurt a thing.

Do not try to use a monotub as a fruiting chamber for your crumbled brf casing....
Just build a sgfc......
For god's sake put it in a ziploc bag.....don't put it in a mono.... Newbs these days...I tell ya
Monos work to humidify themselves from lost/evaporated moisture trapped inside the tub from the bulk sub.
Your casing will not do this it needs its own humidification either a GH or a a SGFC would be the way to go
The physics that are surrounding the monotub only work the way they are designed too. Your plan will NOT work....

If this is regarding what I said, than yes, except for the part about directly spraying it. I mist heavily the same way you would mist anything else that produces mushrooms
And honestly I rarely pour a pitcher of water around the sides anymore either. I just mist it heavy once a day, get a decent second flush and make room for the next tub.

I figured it would of been okay to directly spray it since alot of people completely submerge it anyways. Ill just spray the crap out of the walls, since i just harvested my first flush about 15 minutes ago and spray normally daily

Spraying it directly is harsher than submerging floating it. But it will work too

I dont think so... With mycelium tubs/cakes being as buoyant as they are, it exerts so much force on them trying to keep them underwater. Everything underwater is stressing to float.
Where as spraying is like a morning mist or a rain!

Id Dunk that sumbitch! at least 4 hrs.
myc sinks (look at LCs), its the substrate that floats so your only putting stress on an inanimate object not the living myc (besides lack of oxygen/drowning it)

It won't really look like anything.
There is tons of moisture in a bulk sub. Unless you have a very thin substrate you don't even need to dunk after the first flush. Nor should you worry about hydrating it like a cake.
You should avoid it looking soggy and sopping wet.

any excess moisture should be removed after 24hrs to avoid bacterial blooms
if its not going to soak it up after 24hrs its not going to soak it up.

I'm a bastard to mine. I leave them in the tub with the liner and pour water from a jug straight on the substrate. Then I drain out the top and the top hole. Since I use a liner the water stays on top of the sub and barely pulls away the liner from part of the side.

You should start your own thread and not hijack others. Especially since what you're asking isn't related to the thread at hand.
