Monotub vs SGFC
    #14386281 - 05/02/11 12:27 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

What is the big difference between monotub and shotgun that let's you be lazy with monotub. Such as fanning and misting not being necessary.

In other words what allows the monotub to be a lazy fc.

mono's are used for bulk substrates which evaporate water off their surface and keep the fc humid. SGFC is good for cakes or small trays that aren't self contained like a mono.

A SGFC has to be misted 2-4 times a day from the day of cake-birth.
A monotub has to be fanned 2-4 times a day and maybe misted once a day, from the beginning of pinning.
A monotub is a bit more maintenance free. IMO

Also, the yield per square foot is bigger with monotubs.

Monotub you set all the moisture in the sub. Cakes need constant misting on the daily.

I never fan. I just run a giant fan on the side of my mono and poly fill up the holes of my mono.

Don't touch it. Then harvest when they're ready.

Then harvest again.

Then harvest again.

Then its pretty much not worth keeping. You can still mist your mono, but its not needed if you have good moisture in the sub.

in a monotub your substrate is the humidity source.

in a SGFC the perlite is your humidity source.

How come some people harvest monotubs without any fanning or misting from  birth to harvest?

Because you use bigger holes to get the fae and your substrate will hold a lot of water so leave the lid on and you will have high humidity as well.

I am on my 4th mono.....All with nice harvests, but I still haven't got the god damn thing down pat yet....My first one was awesome, then the next 3 I struggled with....I made the first one a little on the dry side as opposed to the next 3.....So maybe that was the problem.....All and all a success though

Go with a monotub. You will likely make mistakes learning the methods with either FC IMO, and once you get the hang of cakes, you'll probably move on to bulk anyway. I view cakes as for those who can't buy/find the resources necessary for bulk projects.

I started with a hybrid setup and then went to the monotub. It may be my noob-ness or my environmental situation, but the monotubs are much easier than the hybrid for me. It only took 2-3 very poor projects, and it was enough experience and learning to make vast improvements.

3-4" sub with proper moisture, polyfill, constant fan on low, mist once every 1-2 days, additional manual fanning when I remember = easy.

But don't underestimate the power of BRF cakes....They don't just produce a couple mushrooms....They are certainly capable of producing a shitload....

making many cakes is more tedious than making a single monotub.

once you go to bulk grain spawn cakes seem like a joke and a waste of time.

How big a difference is the yield, though? I've seen people get over 4 oz from 33 cakes. That of course equals to about 3 and a half syringes. With that much solution used in monotubs, would the yield be larger?
