Nice hunt today, North Shore. These guys were having a rough time in the windy weather so I rescued them - I kinda stumbled on them and noticed the sub like colouring on the big guy so picked them for a more experienced point of view... enough jibber jabber.

Habitat: wood chip Spore print color: CBF unless someone strongly disagrees about them being makas Bruising: Purpley blue <3 Other information: Smells a little less strong (vaguely like cointreau) than subs

It's not Psilocybe makarorae, it's the undescribed species that belongs in Section Aztecorum, it's very unlikely that you will be successful at making viable spore prints from this species, all attempts have failed and the only successful method of cultivation that I know of has been through tissue cultures.
jacksirius has been kind enough to share his find with me of this species growing in a wood chip garden and I have made some nice photographs which I may post soon, a very beautiful representative of the genus.

Oh wow, I showed them to xthrx and we both thought they were similar Jacksirius` finds.
I am following your links re attica of icelands post and want to draw your attention to the ringlet / stipe (yeah I am a bad) noticeable in the first picture. Is there much point in attempting a spore print if it is going to be amateur? I will have a token attempt this evening for the sake of curiousity.
Thanks inski, I dont know how to feel other than stoked I found a new active to eat ^_^

That's a good one psylo. Has anyone tried printing these mushrooms in a cold environment? Worked for me when I could never get good prints from baeocystis, now I get up to three, nice fatty dark ones. Worth a shot I guess. Amazing find none the less.
-------------------- Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

Nother to go better with your Panda bear steak than some rare Psilocybe. Yummy.

I have tried everything with no success and the real problem lies in the fact that this species is almost sterile, one look at the material under a microscope will show that it produces very few spores and in macroscopic examination the lamellae are never dark in colour, even when left to mature, this species can produce fruit bodies that are able to last for a very long time in favorable conditions, up to 2-3 weeks, the basidia which are rarely seen can be two, three or four spored.

Yes, this species is far from mild, I would have to say it is most likely up there with the most potent species and definitely close to Psilocybe aztecorum and P. baeocystis which it is closely related to!

It's a shame to see this beautiful fungus in this state, images showing the fresh fruit bodies in their habitat are much nicer, it is becoming less rare as the years go by, we can thank G.M.Taylor for her original collection in it's true natural habitat at the glacier in the south island in 1969

Habitat shots to come in a week or so, there will be more there I am sure. They dried very strangely all the caps went white with psychedelic tones if that makes sense, they also dried about 10x faster than subs/subsects, only took 2-3 hrs max, can provide picture of dry specimens in a few days if interested. My trip was fairly decent, very slow almost non existant come up, good peak very manageable but fairytale like, sort of similar to LSD. Very pleased.

ya the whitish color proves what inski said about being related to aztecorum, not that anyone is doubting the fact. its cool to see tho so ya post pics.
just because they are rare to us doesnt mean its rare to them so why wouldnt they try them. i say right on! its definelty worth trying once.
